Saturday Christian Fiction Carnival!

October 18, 2008

This is a new event, hosted weekly, by Amy at “My Friend Amy’s Blog“. :D

The rules are simple:

Each week Amy will post a question or a “prompt”. You take that question and answer it on your blog. Then, go back to My Friend Amy’s Blog and leave your link in the Mr. Linky there. Then visit everyone else’s links and read their answers. So easy!

So, to get things started, the first question asks:

Why do you read and review Christian fiction? Do you exclusively read Christian fiction or do you also read general market books?

I read and review Christian fiction for a couple of reasons. The first is that I’ve always read Christian fiction, and I enjoy most of it (I say “most”, because I just don’t like ‘preachy’ books). The second reason is that Christian fiction is “cleaner” than secular fiction — you’re almost guaranteed not to find any coarse language, violence, or other “stuff” in Christian fiction.

But, I don’t just read Christian fiction, either. I read a great variety of genres (to see a listing of which ones, click HERE to read a previous post about this!).

I also don’t just solely review Christian fiction, either. I also review for places like HarperCollins Canada’sFirst Look” program, and LibraryThing.com’sEarly Reviewers” program. I do so because I enjoy stepping out of my reading ‘comfort zone’ every now and then, AND because there are quite often some really good titles offered up that look very interesting — and have been!

Recently I joined a blog-touring alliance called F.I.R.S.T. (Fiction In Rather Short Takes). It’s for readers of Christian fiction (and nonfiction) who like to read, review, and do blog tours for Christian books. I’m loving it, so far! :D

And, I used to review books for the Christian publisher Bethany House. Through them I found –and became a huge fan of– Robin Parrish.

Edited to add: I agree with the other SCCF participants who say that they read and review Christian books because they are edified by reading books that they can relate to, spiritually… and to help thank the authors for their hard work and ministries. I would count these as my reasons, too. ;)

So, what about YOU? Do you read & review Christian fiction? Head on over to My Friend Amy’s Blog and share your answer! :D

((just a side note: that “button” at the top of this post is one I created, so I’m sure Amy will have a better one. This post just seemed to need some color, so I created a button to go with it! LOL))

PS… If you want to talk with others about CHRISTIAN FICTION, please help me save the Yahoo! group, “HeartMatters“… click HERE to read more!

  1. I like that you read both Christian and general market…I’m just stepping into that myself. And I’ve been enjoying FIRST too!

  2. Oh…I like the button!!

  3. Beautiful post! I’ve had to edit my original post a couple of times based on other carnival participant’s answers, too.

  4. Thanks for the heads up! That challenge sounds interesting!! I dont mind the “advertising” at all. ;o)

I’m also reading other people’s answers to this carnival and thinking…”oh yeah, that too!” LOL

  5. I like the button you designed! I like reading Christian fiction, but haven’t reviewed very many Christian books on my blog yet.

  6. First of all…great button!
I am in agreement with you about wanting to show thanks to these authors too and offer them support. I have been so blessed by reading fiction that now not only entertains me and draws me in (I am definitely a reader who gets transported into the story), but I also feel good about my Lord and learn things about myself and my walk with Him.

I too keep seeing answers that make me go “EXACTLY!!!!” I may have to edit my post tonight. :)

  7. love reading the answers to the question and learning more about people.

  8. MizB I almost copied that button to add to my post. It’s cute. I posted my answers in Mr. Linky at My Friend Amy.

I am enjoying reading everyone’s answers as well. But one thing I forgot to add in my post is I really enjoy interacting with Christian book reviewers. Their a sisterhood/brotherhood thing that I don’t find as much on the other side.

  9. I love the button you created, and the fact that you invite people to join in at the end of your post – I’ve got to remember to add that to mine!
:) I just got my post up here: http://wendisbookcorner.blogspot.com/2008/10/saturday-christian-fiction-carnival.html

Have a great weekend! ~ Wendi

    :o ) Welcome to FIRST…it is a blast :o )

    loved reading your answers!

  13. I agree with all you’ve said! :)

I haven’t made a button b/c I was hoping someone would come up with a clever name for me, but I’ve only had one person make a suggestion so far….so, uh, maybe we’ll use your button. :)

  14. Amy — If you don’t have a different name (or even if you do), feel free to steal the button I made… it’s your’s for the taking! ;)

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
