BTT: Inspiration

January 22, 2009

btt23This week’s BTT post asks:

Since “Inspiration” is (or should be) the theme this week … what is your reading inspired by?

When I first read this question, I wasn’t sure how to answer it. The first thing, though, that sprung to mind was “moods“. I’m definitely a mood-reader, and am “inspired” to choose my next book based on how I’m feeling at any given time.

Next I decided to read through all the other BTT answers for today’s post, and see what I could come up with. And, voila — I’ve got a bunch of answers! Yes, I’m copying, but only because they’re all also true of me!

My reading is inspired by…

…other bloggers’ recommendations
Thanks to the wonderful world of book-bloggers, and events like my “Friday Finds“, I now am usually inundated with “reading inspiration“! My TBR list grows and grows, and I’m always finding new books & authors to try! I’ve already read several that I’ve found via this method, and they were very good!

…reading challenges
Just a couple of years ago, I started taking part in –and creating my own– reading challenges, and it’s been so much fun! I love a good challenge, and I love the fact that I get to use / make up “buttons” (a chance to be “creative”, which I love!), and I get to make up and cross off lists, and I get to chat with others who are striving for a similar goal. Always so much to be happy about when it comes to reading challenges. ;)

…book club picks
Much as I frequently skip the books that my book club chooses due to either time conflicts (I review books, so those take priority over book club choices), or due to just a lack of interest in the book chosen, I still find that there are some that “inspire” me. I have found several that have pulled me out of my comfort zone, but have been really well worth that “trip”. I also really get inspired by the discussions of the group.

…my desire to learn
It’s funny how, back when I was in school, I hated school-work, and I hated to have to do ”research”, and the like. But now I just soak up learning like a sponge! My favorite types of books are ones that teach me something I didn’t know before. I love Christian Living (nonfiction) books that help me grow in my walk of faith. And, I love health & fitness titles that teach me more about nutrition, fitness, and weight loss. I’m even thinking that I might want to eventually take courses to become a part-time Nutrition-Wellness Specialist/Coach! All this just because books “inspired” me! All these memoirs of women who had a ton of weight to lose, and just got determined and got off their tushes to get it done… it’s really motivating!

…book reviewing
I love reviewing books, and finding new titles & authors to try! There are some that I really didn’t think I’d like, but after reading them, found them to be really great!

…and book covers.
And, last but not least, I’m a sucker for a good book cover! You give me a pretty cover, and I’m “inspired” to check that book out! In fact, last May I had the opportunity to browse through a Chapters bookstore, and what did I do? I went through each aisle slowly, and if any book’s cover (or even the art on the spine) caught my eye, I would pull it off the shelf and read the back cover blurb. If both the description AND the cover intrigued (or “inspired”) me, I’d write the title in my notebook, and then carry on (didn’t have the money to buy books that day — just to browse). When I got home, I looked those titles up in the local library’s system, and sure enough, they had a few. So, i read them, and they were awesome! Some made my Top 10 list last year, even! :D

SO, there are plenty of things that inspire me to read! I’m sure there’s more than even what I have listed here, but this is all I can come up with for now (and, I thank all the other BTT participants, as I’d not have been able to even come up with this much, had it not been for your answers!) ;)

I hadn’t even thought of book covers, but you are definitely right. Sometimes one just grabs your eye.

  6. That sums up to my answer as well. :)

  7. All of those thing inspire me as well.

  8. Great idea! I know that I saw myself agreeing with so many other BTT posts too!! I always keep a notebook in my purse so that I can write down titles of books I want to read while I’m browsing in the book store!!

  9. Seems like so many of us didn’t quite know how to answer this one, but you did a great job. I’m a moody reader, too!

  10. Gosh, with all your different sources of inspiration, your TBR pile must be staggering!

How many books do you go through in a week? Rough estimate?

elizabethwillse — I read only about a book a week, usually… sometimes more, if they’re short books. ;)

But, trust me, my TBR pile is HUMONGOUS!!! You can see part of it here, and the rest of it by visiting my LibraryThing.com “bookshelf“, where most of my OWNED books are still *TBR*. ;) LOL.
