BTT: Collectibles
This week’s Booking Through Thursday post is about collecting books:
- Hardcover? Or paperback?
- Illustrations? Or just text?
- First editions? Or you don’t care?
- Signed by the author? Or not?
Well, if I were one that was serious about collecting, then I think I’d be more picky. I would probably choose hardcovers (’cause they last longer), some with illustrations and some without, a couple of First Editions (just for bragging rights), and definitely some signed books.
In fact, I have a small collection of signed books, already! Several of the authors who’ve sent me books have signed them, first. So, I’m very proud of those books.
My prized books, though, are the ones that have kind of come into my possession “by accident” (they were found, or someone gave them to me, maybe not realizing what they were doing). They’re very, very old. One of them is from the early 1800′s! I had to do some research even to figure that out! The other two are books that we found in the wall of our old house when we were renovating.
They’re from the 1930′s and the 1940′s. To me, this is fascinating! I treasure all of these books!
Much as my “collection” is over 1100 books strong, I don’t necessarily consider myself a “book collector” in the true sense of that title… I don’t scour the world (online or otherwise) to find rare books, and I don’t care (usually) whether the book is hardcover or paperback, first edition or otherwise, etc. None of that matters. All I care is that the book appeals to me and is in very good condition.

How neat that you found books in the wall of your house!
Wow, old books found in the wall of an old house! Sounds like a Nancy Drew plot. How exciting!
An old book in your house? That DOES sound like a great story.
I’m like you: my favorite finds were books that sort of found me.
Love the story of the books in the wall!! How neat.
I wish I had 1100 books.
mine
Wow, that’s a lot of books
1100 books is a library! I don’t mind whether harcover or trade paperback either, as long as they’re not mass market paperbacks.
1100 books????? wow!! I want to come over and just look at your titles!!!
Staci — LOL. Much as it’s not the same thing, you’re welcome to view my collection online — it’s logged at LibraryThing.com!
How cool to find a books in your wall! We found a newspaper when we remodeled our kitchen.
Where can I find old car manuals for repairs, Im talking of the 70′ties and 60’tis. Thanks
