BTT: Worse?

April 30, 2009

bookingthroughthurs-15This week’s Booking Through Thursday post asks:

Which is worse?… Finding a book you love and then hating everything else you try by that author –or– Reading a completely disappointing book by an author that you love?

I’m not sure if I’ve ever tried a second book by an author I enjoyed and disliked it, so I’m going to choose option 2: reading a disappointing book by a favorite author.

I know that, if I were to read one of Gaelen Foley’s books (my favorite author) and find it to be sorely disappointing — which, right now, I find HIGHLY impossible (knock-on-wood) — I’d be really upset. Her books haven’t disappointed me yet, and I’ve read about 11 or 12 of them, so far (almost everything she’s written). So, to be let down after all that would be a huge shock to my system. But, I don’t think I’d give up on her… I think I’d try another after that, to be sure it wasn’t just a fluke. ;)

While this isn’t part of the actual question, I know there’ve been many books where I hadn’t yet tried the author, really looked forward to reading that particular book, and then was really let down by the content. But, I guess that’s bound to happen sometimes. You can’t judge a book by its cover, right? ;)

Edited to Add: Of course, as always happens to me, I come up with a better answer AFTER I’ve already linked to the main post! LOL. Another BTT participant’s comment on this week’s post is what sparked the thought! LOL.

Anyhoo, this answers option 1, above: I have read a lot of books by Philippa Gregory, and have loved most of them. All were in the “Tudor” series. But, then I tried her other book,  “Zelda“ (not part of the series), because I needed a “Z” title for my alphabet readers challenge the one year… and it was awful! A big disappointment. I’d been so looking forward to reading it, as I’d loved her other books, but it really let me down. Mind you, I will still keep reading the books from the Tudor series, as I believe they’re just different. But I’m not sure I’ll try any of her other novels again.

  1. I’ve only read one Gregory novel. I’m not sure I want to read the other ones. My post is up!!

  2. For me its reading a book i love and then hating everything else by that author. Its so depressing!

  3. I have not really tried it yet, but according to some of my blogger friends P.D. James´ latest crime novel is not really up to her usual standard. I am certainly going to read it before or later, but I know it will make me sad if I can feel her standard slipping. Her Dalgliesh series has given me so many pleasures over the years.

  4. I had heard so much about Philippa Gregory so I decided to give one of her books a try. I picked Zelda’s cut first and didn’t like it so much. But i thought the writing was amazing, al though I am not sure I am ready to read another one yet.

  5. I could only get through The Other Boleyn Girl. I had a lot of trouble getting into other Gregory novels. To me Boleyn was her best book and reading it first I expected the same spark in her other novels.

  6. While I may be disappointed by one book from a favorite author, I forget the book and wait for the next one.
I have not read any of Philippa Gregory’s books yet.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
