    I had an Amazon gift certificate burning a hole in my pocket. I went to my favorite resources (fellow readers) from my blog to decide how best to spend it: Carol Jago is president of National Council of Teachers of English this year. She is also a recently retired teacher, prolific writer, voracious reader, and all-around great person. She has a list here:http://www.caroljago.com/Export47.htm

    I also belong to Lemuria Books’ First Editions Club, so I am getting a new signed first edition of something great every month: http://lemuriabooks.com/index.php?show=fec

    Some of the books they select are first novels (many quite wonderful). Some have gone on to win important book awards as well.
