Musing Mondays (June 22)
(Musing Mondays are hosted by Rebecca!)
This week’s question asks:
Do you restrict yourself on how many books you take out from the library at a time? Do you borrow books if you already have some out? Do you always reborrow books you don’t get to?
I never really restrict myself on how many library books I can take out. Our system lets us take out up to 20, but I’ve never even come close to that. I usually have anywhere from 1-7 books out at a time.
Mind you, now that I’ve been putting the kids’ books on my card, too, that total grows. I think we have 8 books out, total, right now (3 for my son, 4 for me, and 1 for my daughter). I put their books on my card because I don’t seem to remember due dates for them, otherwise, and we rack up late fees. :-&
I have no qualms with borrowing additional books if I already have library books at home.
That’s the beauty of online ordering… I can keep going and going, and they come in at random.
I love the online catalogue!
I don’t think I’ve reborrowed books that I haven’t gotten to, yet. There’ve been many, many, many books that I’ve taken out of the library just to browse through — with no real intent of finishing them. Another perk of the library system.
If I’m just skimming, though, I won’t usually keep them for the full 3 weeks they’re checked out for — that doesn’t seem fair to the other patrons.
I love, too, that I can keep renewing my checked out books up to 3 times (given there are no other holds on them). That’s quite a while, so I usually can finish the book. Mind you, if it’s a huge book, and I’m enjoying it, but can’t finish it by the deadline, I’ll put it on my “to be bought” list, and just get my own copy. I recently bought “Anna Karenina” (by Tolstoy), and “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” (Chabon) for this reason.
I rarely have fines on my account… I’m a good patron, and keep very vigilant attention in regards to my library account. I know, off the top of my head, usually, when each book is due back. I’m into my online account several times a week to double-check. The librarians are always somewhat baffled that I seem to know which books have come in for me, when I go to pick up the books I ordered via the online catalog… but, see, when the automated system calls to tell me I have books in at the local branch, I usually go online, first, to check which books came, and then I head out to the library to get them. That way I’m sure to get everything that’s there, and there can be no, “Oh, sorry, I didn’t see that one“, kind of mistakes.
LOL. Anal? Yeah, maybe a little.
But, I don’t care. I love my local library — especially in times like these, where money’s scarce, and buying (even at the goodwill store, where books are only $0.50 each) is hard to do.
PS…I, just the other day, joined in on the Support Your Local Library 2009 Reading Challenge hosted by J.Kaye. I wasn’t going to because I wanted to read more of my own books this year. But, given that I’ve already read as many as I said I would from my own piles, and I’m STILL borrowing a ton from the library, it just made sense.

I’m doing the TBR Challenge and the Library Challenge, too!
I love being able to go online too! I haven’t ever had to worry about picking up all the books I ordered…our library is good about rubber-banding all the books together that have come in for one person.
I love our library’s website too! We get e-mail alerts when books are due, so I hardly ever have a fine. So much nicer than the “old days” where I had to track everything on my calendar and would always forget something!
I did the library challenge earlier in the year and really enjoyed it. I can have 20 books out too and just keep ordering them on the internet. Hubby says I need to start paying for all their phone calls to tell me they have a book in for me.
Okay I don’t even know how many books my library allows. I guess I have never pushed the limit and found out! Here. is my Musing Monday!
I’ve never “pushed the limit” either, Danielle — I only know it’s 20 for my library ’cause a friend of mine actually DOES take out (and READ!) that many books! :-O

I’m a huge supporter of my library! I love the online features (requesting and renewing) too.
I love J. Kaye’s Library challenge! And like you, it doesn’t matter how many books I have at home, I still check some out at the library.
I tend to check out audio books from the library (since I have PLENTY of the other kind at home just begging to be read.) I usually limit myself to two because I am afraid if I don’t get to one, I won’t get it again later.
My library has no restrictions. I have a very useful one myself: don´t take more books than you can carry home! With the lengtht most novels have nowadays that is c 10.
My library has begun a new service this year: they send me e-mails three days before I have to bring the books back. Super!
Awesome! I wish my library would do that! Kinda like our local movie rental place…they call to let you know, a few hours in advance, that the movies you rented are due back.
I will return to borrowing from the library as soon as I finish reading all the unread books in my house.
I figure about 2015…lol
ROTFLOL… I’d need waaaaay longer than ’til 2015 to read all the books I have in my own collection! I’ve given up thinking I’ll ever get them all read… instead, I’ll just have fun trying. ;P

At one time, oh so long ago, I had 90% of all the books in the house read.
Then I got a job and the money was mine, not ours…and a discount bookstore went out of business….
Now I don’t even want to guess how many are unread!
I didn’t feel guilty about borrowing six books yesterday from the library. *I’ve listed them as Library Loot!
I currently have NINE books checked out of the library! One may be returned unread if I’m still having trouble getting into and five are waiting for me to review before sending back. There are also four on request
I haven’t had to add my kid’s books to my card since my youngest could write his name. The poor kid was 16 and still had the same card he “signed” when he was 5!
My library has request & renew online but I can also change the dates requested just in case I’m going out of town (OR have too many books coming in a once!)
I joined J.Kaye’s challenge too!
Love your teaser and the cover to that book!!

There is the link to my Teaser Tuesday!
Great teaser today. =)
I got myself buried in library books but not putting any limits on myself. I just could never walk away from the new books that I wanted to read. Sadly I’ve had to renew quite a few of them–some four times. I do feel a little guilty about that. I’ve had to restrict myself from going into the library for the past three weeks and I’m really missing my books on CD.
