Booking Through Thursday: Preferences

July 23, 2009

bookingthroughthurs-1This week’s question asks:

Which do you prefer? (Quick answers–we’ll do more detail at some later date)

  • Reading something frivolous? Or something serious?
  • Paperbacks? Or hardcovers?
  • Fiction? Or Nonfiction?
  • Poetry? Or Prose?
  • Biographies? Or Autobiographies?
  • History? Or Historical Fiction?
  • Series? Or Stand-alones?
  • Classics? Or best-sellers?
  • Lurid, fruity prose? Or straight-forward, basic prose?
  • Plots? Or Stream-of-Consciousness?
  • Long books? Or Short?
  • Illustrated? Or Non-illustrated?
  • Borrowed? Or Owned?
  • New? Or Used?

(Yes, I know, some of these we’ve touched on before, and some of these we might address in-depth in the future, but for today–just quick answers!)

Okay — here are my answers:

  • Reading something frivolous? Or something serious? a good mix of both
  • Paperbacks? Or hardcovers? paperbacks (trade, usually)
  • Fiction? Or Nonfiction? Nonfiction, most of the time
  • Poetry? Or Prose? prose, definitely
  • Biographies? Or Autobiographies? biographies (unless by “autobiography” you mean Memoir? ’cause I love me a good memoir!)
  • History? Or Historical Fiction? historical fiction
  • Series? Or Stand-alones? stand-alones (usually)
  • Classics? Or best-sellers? best-sellers
  • Lurid, fruity prose? Or straight-forward, basic prose? straight-forward, basic
  • Plots? Or Stream-of-Consciousness? plots
  • Long books? Or Short? short, usually
  • Illustrated? Or Non-illustrated? non-illustrated, for the most part
  • Borrowed? Or Owned? owned (though, that’s not usually possible)
  • New? Or Used? new (but that’s not usually possible, either! LOL)

LOL. I can’t seem to give a straight answer! I usually like to have either/or… I don’t have a lot of static (set) preferences! The only ones (above) that I can say with absolute certainty that I definitely prefer are: historical fiction over history, biographies over autobiographies, prose over poetry, and straight-forward prose over the ‘fruity’ stuff. ;)

I don’t like a ton of description in a book, and I like my books to be fairly quick reads… I don’t usually like those slow, rambling stories. Drives me crazy!

Soooo… there you have it. ;)

  1. hehehe yeah i agree with you. I can’t decide either. I’m such a mix.

  2. The one thing I’m sure of is that I HATE, nay, loathe, stream of consciousness books. I’m even annoyed when a chapter has a few paragraphs like that. (Follow Me springs to mind…I couldn’t get past the opening stream of consciousness paragraphs that the author kept putting in the beginning of the chapters)

  3. This is such a great BTT question. I haven’t done it, but mine would be the word “both” in nearly every category!

  4. Great answers! The name of my blog is “Well-Mannered Frivolity” – can you guess what my answer to number 1 was? It was hard to choose between some of the answers this week though…

  5. My answers were generally “Both” mostly. But like you i was sure of some also! It was fun “)

  6. We had a few of the same answers. Here is mine

  7. Well, it isn´t always so simple to give a straight answer. I don´t read many classics, but I don´t go after best-sellers either.

I like hardbacks, but if I am the one who pays, I choose the cheapest, second-hand copy I can get my hand on etc …

  8. It is hard to type a simple answer without giving some type of explanation. My post is finally up.

    here

    Have a great weekend.

  9. At first I said biographies, then I changed my mind right before publishing.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
