Musing Mondays (Aug.31)
Do you buy books as gifts for children – either your own or those of friends or family? Would you buy books for all children, or only children who are already practiced readers?
I’ve bought books for kids… mainly my own kids, mind you. LOL. But, I would buy books for kids any day! And, yes… regardless of whether/not they could read well! You learn by practicing, so the more books they’re exposed to, the better!
My son loves to read graphic novels and books based on his favorite TV shows (“Pokemon“, “Bakugan“, etc). So, I buy a lot of those types for him. My daughter loves crafty-type books, or how-to-draw books, so I buy a lot of those for her (as well as fiction in the form of ”chapter books”).
My favorite place to buy books for kids is at the goodwill store. The books for kids are only $0.10 each, so it doesn’t hurt the pocket-book, and they usually have TONS to choose from.
Personally, I think kids’ books in the regular stores (even Wal-Mart) are priced WAY too high ((and, yes, this is a HUGE pet-peeve of mine!)). If they’d price them lower, they’d still make as much, because more people would be able to afford them, and therefore would buy them. But at $6-$8 per book, I just can’t justify it most of the time, sadly.

Oh, I am a fan of used books, for myself as well!
I think the greatest gift that you can give a person is a love of reading, and giving a child a book of their very own, hopefully about a subject that interests them, is a great way to start.
I introduced my son with books of his favorites on TV. Now, he searches for his own and i’m just too happy to indulge.
I love giving and receiving books. Luckily my family read just as much as I do so if I don´t know exactly which book to buy for them, a book token is always popular.
I buy for my cousins. mine

I agree with you – the price of books is a major deterrent for a lot of people. That’s great that you use the Goodwill to help fuel your kid’s passion for reading. My parents were the same way – they encouraged my hunger for reading by buying me books all the time (they still frequently do!).
I love buying books for kids. Big fan of buying used for the kiddies though.
