And the winners are…
Last night was the first meeting of my face-to-face book group for this “year” (September 2009 – June 2010). We always pick our list of books for the year at the September meeting, so we had fun last night! I know I did, anyway!
Wanna see what we picked?
This is the list of books we chose to read:
OCTOBER 2009
“The Wife’s Tale” by Lori Lansens
NOVEMBER 2009
“The Kommandant’s Girl” by Pam Jenoff (my 1st suggestion)
DECEMBER 2009
“The Tenth Gift” by Jane Johnson
JANUARY 2010
“Mountains Beyond Mountains” by Tracy Kidder
FEBRUARY 2010
“Galore” by Michael Crummey
MARCH 2010
“The Gargoyle” by Andrew Davidson
APRIL 2010
“Still Alice” by Lisa Genova
MAY 2010
“What Shamu Taught Me About Life, Love, and Marriage” by Amy Sutherland (my 2nd suggestion)
JUNE 2010
“Wiped: Life with a Pint-Sized Dictator” by Rebecca Eckler
And, the books that were suggested that did NOT get chosen this time were:

- “Infidel” by Ayaan Hirsi Ali
- “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts
- “The Lost Symbol” by Dan Brown
- “Through Black Spruce” by Joseph Boyden
- “Inside the Whale” by Jennie Rooney (my 3rd suggestion)
- “Heart in the Right Place: A Memoir” by Carolyn Jourdan (my 4th)
- “Palace Circle” by Rebecca Dean (my 5th)
- “The Road to Paris” by Nikki Grimes (my 6th)
- “Handle With Care” by Jodi Picoult
- “The Audacity of Hope” by Barack Obama
- “The Witch of Portobello” by Paulo Coelho
- “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy
- “The Shack” by William P. Young
- “Blood River” by Tim Butcher
- “Any Known Blood” by Lawrence Hill
Don’t they look good? I’d really like to read the first 4 of the ones we didn’t pick. Those are now on my TBR list, regardless.
So, have any of you read any of these? If so, I’d love to hear your opinions, please! (no spoilers, though, okay? Thanks!)

I LOVED The Kommandant’s Girl. Can’t wait to hear what you think. Happy reading!

Lots of interesting books you guys choose. I haven’t heard of nary a one. Look forward to hearing what you think.
Great list of variety! I received 10 copies from Readers Group Guide of Still Alice — I read it and really enjoyed it for it’s thought provoking message. Should be good for a discussion.
The Shack is very controversial. Because I am already very grounded spiritually, I could enjoy its message without being offended. If you choose to read it — don’t stop before you get to the “garden” part. That’s when all the great messages start.
Thanks, Kim — I’ve already read The Shack, and have to say that, while it had some good points, I also found the theology to be somewhat “off”. I’m not sad that I read it, though. I am glad to know what I think about that one.

I haven’t read any on either list. A lot of them look really good, though.
I read The Road not too long ago. It was definitely interesting and kinda creepy. Looks like you have a lot of good things there!
I just finished Mountains Beyond Mountains last night! It’s a really great book, but took me forever to read. I’m hoping to post a review soon. I’ve also read The Road. If you are interested in a direct link to my review on that one, let me know!! It was definitely not one of my faves!
My face to face always t5ake a break for in September and October because we all participate in the International Film Festival as well. We usually go for coffee in between films and discuss films. Later in October is the Readers and Writers Festival which we all attend as well. Then we meet up every 6 weeks starting in November for our book group.
Btw: I ordered Galore and Year of the Flood from Amazon. I had to have them and both authors will be her for the Readers and Writers Festival later in Oct. so I am hoping I can get them signed.
Darn, sorry I didn’t make the cut. : )
