The Sunday Salon (Apr.25)

April 25, 2010

The week started out with me being in a fairly big reading slump. I just couldn’t get into anything, and didn’t even feel like reading (if you can believe that!). Then I got 6 books in from the local library, so I thought they’d be the thing to pull me out.

In a way, they were. But, not by themselves! LOL. One of the books I got from the library was “Talking to Your Kids About S-x” by Laura Berman. Looking through that prompted me to go to my own shelves and pick out a book I’d had sitting there –nagging at me– for the past 3 years: “Preparing Your Son for Every Man’s Battle” by Fred Stoeker and Stephen Arterburn. My son has just turned 12, and we haven’t yet had “the talk”. And, given that the government was planning some pretty serious changes to our schools’ s-x ed classes next year (thank-the-Lord, now put on hold and being revised!), I wanted to be sure to be prepared by talking to my son, first. Hence my reading of this book. ;)

That prompted me, when finished, to get out my other book (that I’ve owned since Jan.2008), “Preparing Your Daughter for Every Woman’s Battle” by Shannon Ethridge (see my procrastination in reading these tough-subject books? LOL). I’m almost through with it, too, and then will have to do the hard part of actually talking to my kids! LOL.

Next up, I’m not sure what I’m going to dig into. Some of the other library books I got were also parenting books: “A Nation of Wimps” by Hara Marano (about being overprotective); “Character is the Key” by Sara Dimerman (about developing your kids’ character); and “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk” by Adele Faber and Elaine Mazlish.

I also got “Bird By Bird” by Anne Lamott, because I’m thinking of getting back into writing, and “God Is” by David Adams Richards, because it’s on my TwentyTen reading challenge list. ;)

Here’s to a week of reading with no slumps getting in the way! ;)

  1. I read HOW TO TALK SO YOUR KIDS WILL LISTEN…several years ago. I found some good nuggets in it. Hope your reading week is profitable and fun!

  2. So glad you have the opportunity to read my book. Thanks for mentioning it here. I look forward to getting some feedback once you`re done.

    • :D I just started your book last night, Sara, so I’ll have a review of it within the week, I’m sure. Thanks so much for the comment! :D

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
