BTT: Restrictions
((BTT is hosted at http://btt2.wordpress.com ))
This week’s question asks:
God* comes to you and tells you that, from this day forward, you may only read ONE type of book–one genre–period, but you get to choose what it is. Classics, Science-Fiction, Mystery, Romance, Cookbooks, History, Business … you can choose, but you only get ONE.
What genre do you pick, and why?
*Whether you believe in God or not, pretend for the purposes of this discussion that He is real.
What a tough question!
I think I’d have to go with the ‘Christian Living‘ genre, as that’s where my reading normally falls. Much as I love fiction, I tend to be too picky about it. So, I normally choose Christian Living books, as I’ve always loved “self-help” books, and I love to learn.
Besides, I’m coming to realize that my whole reason for existence is to love God and love others, so these types of books would help me live that out and give me the so-called “tools” to help my purpose.
Some of my favorites in this genre have been:
“Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith” by Rob Bell
“A Scandalous Freedom” by Steve Brown
“The Barbarian Way” by Erwin Raphael McManus
“The Backward Life” by Jarrod Jones
“Dare to Dream” by Florence Littauer
“Jesus In the Margins” by Rick McKinley
“Breaking Free” by Beth Moore
“10 Things I Hate About Christianity” by Jason T. Berggren
“Crave: Wanting So Much More of God” by Chris Tomlinson

I would cry (because I love reading alll kinds of different genres) but then I would choose mystery.
Someone else who chose a non-fiction genre! I was starting to think I’d be the only one.
Like Juju I would be very upset by this, but I would ultimately choose mystery for a couple of reasons. First off, it is the genre I read the most, and secondly, it would allow me to skirt the restriction a wee bit as so many mysteries have elements of other genres. I would really miss my cookbooks though. Wait, does using the recipes count as reading? Egads. If so, I would have to keep my cookbooks. Dang.
That’s interesting – I wouldn’t have thought of that! I like that you have a list of your favourites, since you could always expand off that.
I may have cheated a little – I chose non-fiction as a genre in and of itself.
I’ve actually been pondering the content of my books after grabbing something at the library recently that was full of the things I don’t think are appropriate. I’m currently listening to John’s Story by LaHaye/Jenkins and I’m trying to stick to only inspirational fiction. I do read the christian self help type books, but those take me longer. Good for you that you like those so much! And amen to what life’s about!
Excellent answer!
