The Sunday Salon (July 25)

July 25, 2010

This week was a slower reading week for me, mainly because the one book was a chunkster (485 pages).

I finished both “Claim” by Lisa T. Bergren, and “City of Bones” by Cassandra Clare. Both were good reads. Then I started into “Bitten” by Kelley Armstrong. I’m a bit disappointed with it, though. It’s not as good as I expected.

In the mail, I got my copy of Susan May Warren’s “Licensed for Trouble“. I’ll probably start in on that next, if not my library copy of “Your Roots Are Showing” by Elise Chidley. The library book’s due date is fast approaching, so I may need to get to that, first.

Yesterday, over at My Friend Amy’s Blog, I read a cool post about how we supposedly read out of need. She is referencing Laura Miller of The Salon, and Lorin Stein of The Paris Review, and how Lorin (in this article) is quoted, saying:

I don’t think people read ‘for’ pleasure, exactly,” he went on. “Of course there is pleasure in reading. But mainly we do it out of need. Because we’re lonely, or confused, or need to laugh, or want some kind of protection or quiet — or disturbance, or truth, or whatever.

I, for one, definitely read as a means of escape, a lot of the time. It’s my way to get away from the world, for a while, and just immerse myself in whatever I’m reading… be it fiction, or nonfiction.

I also read to know I’m not alone in whatever it is I’m dealing with at the time.

And –probably not lastly– I read to learn. Whenever I want to know about something, I get a book on the subject. I’ve been known to collect books on certain topics of interest, too (writing, psychology, dieting, etc).

How about you? Do you agree or disagree with the above quote?

Anyhoo. Other library books I have “on tap” for the coming week or two are:

:: “Italian for Beginners: A Novel” by Kristen Harmel
:: “Untamed” by P.C. & Kristin Cast
:: “Hunted” by P.C. & Kristin Cast

Oh, I almost forgot! I also got from the library a book journal called “Read, Remember, Recommend” — written by a fellow book blogger, Rachelle Rogers Knight. I was so tickled to see so many of my fellow book bloggers listed in the “Resources” section at the back — what got me, really though, was that, while only the links were given, I could go, “Oh, that’s Wendy’s blog, and that’s Amy’s blog, and that’s JKaye’s blog…” LOL. :P How cool!

Definitely go check it out! :D

  1. Good question. I guess I read for entertainment mostly. I have always enjoyed learning about people and places. I think reading just adds so much to my view of the world. I can’t seem to read fast enough to get to everything I want to read. Do you ever feel that way?

  2. I mostly read for entertainment and I like a lot of different genres. Also, I am definitely going to check that blogger-book out. Great recommendation.

  3. I read for entertainment, education, and flat out escapism! I’ve enjoyed starting my little bitty book review blog as well — great to know your history on it and how you started!

  4. For me the Kelley Armstrong didn’t really take off until after the first two books. Now it is one of my favourite Urban Fantasy series.

  5. I do reviews for LibraryThing Early Reviewers when I win one…not on a regular basis.

    I like to do the reviews.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
