Musing Mondays (Aug. 23)

August 23, 2010

Today is my step-brother’s birthday, and given that he’s a firefighter/paramedic, I figured I’d post a question that kind of is inspired by him. :D

Today’s musing asks…

If your house was burning down –and you could SAFELY grab a book on your way outside to safety– what book would you make sure you ‘rescued’? Why?

Sappy and unoriginal as it sounds, I’d grab my big, black-leather NIV Bible… but only because it used to belong to my grandfather, and he passed away 10 years ago. I was very close to him, and this is one of the few items I have that were from him (I also have a locket, and a keyboard).

It’s not like this Bible has any of my grandpa’s writing in it, or anything like that. It just used to belong to him, and that’s enough to make it really special to me.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. Yeah, if I were you it’s what I’d take also! One of my keenest memories of Pap is him kneeling by his bed every evening to read his Bible & pray.

  2. Great answer. Here is my answer: http://annsreadingcorner.blogspot.com

  3. Great answer….mine would be Shadow of the Wind.

That is my all-time favorite book…loved it so much that I went to Barcelona. :)

    • Nuts! I never thought about all of my diaries/journals!!! Eek! I’d hate to leave them behind … so many memories! :(

  4. Just the idea of this question is giving me an anxiety attack. I can’t answer it objectively. It’s just not possible. Do I grab The Chronicles of Narnia that I’ve had since I was a kid? Or the Nancy Drew my mom bought me? Probably that one. But what about The Great Gatsby, my favorite book ever? Or do I grab the ARC books I haven’t read? Arrrghh! I’m totally stressed out just thinking! So I won’t answer. But I’m going to read all of yours. :)

    • I got stressed out, too! May need to go buy a fire safe to store all my favorites in.

      • Awww, sorry folks! Didn’t mean to stress anyone out! :?

  6. Hmmm, tricky one. I think I’d probably grab my dog eared and yellowing copy of Illywhacker by Peter Carey. Simply because it has always been a favourite of mine (and also, there is quite a lot of it, so it would keep me going for a while until I managed get some new stuff!)

  7. Since I have 2 cats and a Chihuahua in the house to grab first, most possibly unless there was a book in my purse would have time to grab none because the pets would take time to round up into carriers and get out to safety! I can honestly say I wish that there was a family Bible to save but no such luck as we have “generic” bibles that hold no sentimental value as were not passed down from anyone!
