Musing Mondays (Oct.4)

October 4, 2010

This week’s musing asks…

What’s your favorite “cozy” book — and, by that, I’m meaning “curl-up-on-a-cold-day comfort read“? Or, if you don’t have a particular book, what genre do you most feel like reading when the weather starts to turn colder?

For me, it’s not even a genre, or a particular book… when the weather starts turning colder, I start craving chunky books… books over 450 pages.

Right now I’m really looking forward to digging into “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy. This one’s over 900 pages long. But, I already started reading it — a while back — and now my f2f book club has chosen to read it for January, so I’m planning on digging back into it, soon. I’m really glad my book group chose to read it, as it’s good motivation for me to get back to it, and it lets me satisfy my “chunker” craving. ;)

When the weather gets colder, the chunkier books on my shelves start calling to me, too: “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” by Michael Chabon, “A Short History of Nearly Everything” by Bill Bryson, “A History of Reading” by Alberto Manguel, “The Conjurer’s Bird” by Michael Davies, etc.

I think a lot of this craving is because, with the colder weather, you want to stay with one book for longer… or, at least for me, it’s so. I don’t want to go outside, and the longer I can stay curled up with a book, the better. ;)

I just bought “Halo” by Alexandra Adornetto, and it’s almost 500 pages long. I’m really looking forward to curling up with it, too!

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. I should be reading Halo this week. But, I don’t consider it my cozy book. Wanna know what I consider to be my favorite cozy books? Check out my Musing For Monday.

  6. I suppose you are right MizB, now that I think about it. Chunksters are sort of a winter time thing aren’t they. I guess because we spend more time inside in cold weather and thus have more time fro reading. My answer was different.

  8. I love chunksters, but they definitely get tossed to the side on a grab some hot chocolate and read day.

  9. I’m with you on longer books…Wow, I had forgotten that Anna Karenina has 900 pages or so. I read it when I was younger, and I wasn’t trying to hurry through books, like I sometimes do these days…to post the reviews, or to move on to the next one.

    There’s a lesson there, I’m sure…

  10. I can’t wait to read Halo! I agree about reading longer books when the weather gets cold. The longer the book, the longer I can stay nice and warm curled up in bed. :)

  11. I sort of have a thing for chunky books in the winter too. Somehow they seem too heavy for spring and summer. Here’s my musing: http://parchmentgirl.com/2010/10/04/musing-mondays-no-four/

  12. When cold weather comes, it reminds me of the holidays. So I crave christmas themed or holiday themed books.

  13. Good question; I think your answer is similar to mine as well. Here’s my response: http://www.rulethewaves.net/blog/?p=1759

  14. Rain or shine, hot or cold, I have one genre that is my fall back, comfort read… http://caitesdayatthebeach.blogspot.com/2010/10/rainy-chilly-musing-monday.html

  15. Weather doesn’t influence what I read.

It was tough to choose but I managed to whittle it down to something by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Here’s my entry.

  17. I posted twice. But it does not show. How come?
