BTT: Life-Changing

December 23, 2010

This week’s Booking Through Thursday question asks…

What book changed your life?

I’m tempted to say that there are MANY books that have changed my life, not just one.

For sure, one book jumps out at me: “Thin Within: A Grace-Oriented Approcah to Lasting Weight Loss” by Judy & Arthur Halliday. I’ve had a “problem” with excess weight since my son was born 12.5 years ago, and this is the only book (“plan”) that I ever had success with… I believe in it wholeheartedly (even though I’m struggling with following it, at the moment), and won’t ever go back to following other methods. This one just makes the most sense to me.

But, there have been many other books, too, that have influenced my thinking or opinion in one way or another.

For example, I was brought up in the church, and taught a lot of things. But, through reading and life (but mostly through reading), I’ve come to realize that not everything I was taught was necessarily the truth. Some of it was just personal opinion. So, there’ve been authors that have really opened my eyes to how things truly are, and have helped me to grow in my faith.

There’ve also been authors who have brought me out of my shell, so-to-speak. I used to be very close-minded and shy… but reading has expanded my horizons, my knowledge, and my perspective, and I think I’m much more open to things now than I was as a young teen… or, even as a 20-something.

There’ve been books that have inspired me to take up a cause… books that have turned me off of things… books that have motivated me to change certain aspects of my life… and books that have helped me heal old wounds.

So, yeah… I don’t think that I could claim that just ONE book has changed my life. Even though “Thin Within” was good, and it changed one aspect of my life, it wasn’t overall “life-changing”… for that, it’d have to affect every part of my life, and it hasn’t (yet). ;)

  1. It is so interesting reading all the comments today, such a wide variety of books that have changed peoples lives today.

I think when it comes to weight issues, it is best to find one that works for you and follow it. As for myself and one of my daughters, we find that the Weight Watchers program works for us. My other daughter finds the Fit For Life program works for her. And you have found The Thin Within program works for you. I’m so glad that there are so many choices to choose from, because we are all so different when it comes to weight issues, that one that works for one, may not work for the other.

  2. I like your answer. Though one book has changed one aspect of your life, many others have changed other aspects. I couldn’t even come up with one specific book really because for me all changed my life in some way and I’m terrible at choosing favorites.

I’m struggling with weight issues right now, myself so I may look at Thin Within.

  3. Which book changed your life?

I would have to say the Harry Potter and Twilight series because they sparked so many conversations with people I know well and people I just met. It’s also fun talking with people about the different aspects between the books and the movies.

  4. Wow… I think that book sounds like something I really need. My problem half the time is not giving myself enough grace and not fully trusting that God is motivated by grace as well. Thanks for sharing!!

Here are my life changing books!

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
