Musing Mondays (Jan.17)

January 17, 2011

This week’s musing asks…

Do you prefer deep, intellectual, “meaty” books… or light, “fluffy” books? Why? Give us an example of your preferred type of book. ;)

Most of the time, I think I prefer books that are somewhere in between. I don’t like my books too fluffy — I really don’t care for “chick lit” and the like. But, I don’t like them too intellectual or “meaty”, either, as then they just go right over my head!

For example, I read a book, last year, called “On Guard” by William Lane Craig. It’s a book on Apologetics, so I knew it would be a heavy read. But, little did I know that it would be so heavy! LOL. It really, honestly made my brain hurt, and I had to keep stopping and setting the book aside for a while, as I just couldn’t take any more! LOL.

But, then there are books like “Lost Christianities” by Bart D. Ehrman. This one was about the history of the Bible, and how the books that it contains came to be included, and why certain books were left out. I normally hate history, but this book was really interesting, and written in a way that it kept my attention.

For an example of what I do like, there’s “Deep in the Valley” by Robyn Carr… a little on the lighter side, but still with enough to it that I didn’t find it entirely fluffy; or “Everything’s Coming Up Josey” by Susan May Warren (still light, but not fluffy); or “Losing the Moon” by Patti Callahan Henry (somewhere in the middle); or “Mindless Eating” by Brian Wansink (getting meatier); or “Reading Lolita in Tehran” by Azar Nafisi (definitely more on the “meaty” side, but not so much that I disliked the book). ;)

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answers in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

Here’s my musings on today’s topic.

  11. Hi Miz B! I love your blog! Here is my first Musing Mondays post:

  12. Lost Christianities does sounds interesting! Glad you are enjoying it!

  13. I look at it this way: should be literature and not just any fiction. Full musing is up.

  14. My reading tends to be 60/40 in favor of nonfiction — mostly history, science, or philosophy. I like a book with a lot of meat on it, and that goes for novels as well. The lightest reading I do is Star Trek paperbacks, and those have been increasingly substantial in recent years.

  15. Gotta say I’m mostly a fluff girl with a little bit of “lean” meat thrown in :-) Here’s my post.

  16. Aww — that’s so poetic and sad — “or was it only the rain?” Why is she crying?

Here’s my teaser from Delirium by Lauren Oliver

  17. I really really really want to read this! :)

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
