Musing Mondays (Jan.24)
This week’s musing (courtesy of Squidoo) asks…
Is there a book you absolutely love, but for some reason, people never think it sounds interesting, or maybe they read it and don’t like it at all?
There are lots of books like that, for me! Maybe because I read a lot out of the Christian genre, and that isn’t a common one (not that I’ve found, anyway). And, I have very eclectic tastes, or so I’m told, so I read a lot of different stuff, and have an interesting assortment of books in my collection.
My favorite books include:
- “Gifted Hands: The Dr. Ben Carson Story” by Dr. Ben Carson w/Cecil Murphey
- “Writer Ferrets: Chasing the Muse” by Richard Bach
- “Velvet Elvis: Repainting the Christian Faith” by Rob Bell
- “The Moon Below” by Barbara Bickmore
- The Dominion Trilogy (“Relentless” | “Fearless” | “Merciless“) by Robin Parrish
- “Losing the Moon” by Patti Callahan Henry
…amongst others. And, any time I recommend these books, people just non-committally tell me they sound interesting, and then go about their ways.
But, probably the book I talk about the most is (and, yes, I know ya’ll are going to groan at this), “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer. It was such a turning point for me! Up until I read it, I didn’t read vampire books… I didn’t read fantasy much at all, actually. Nor did I dig much into young adult fiction. But, after giving this book a try (and loving it — then finishing the rest of the series within a month), I started seeking out other young adult fantasy titles, and now I’m completely hooked! This is now one of my favorite (and preferred) genres!
But, the crowd I come from (family/friends) doesn’t swing that way. They make a face every time I mention any of these types of books — like they’re disgusted with the idea. They just can’t understand what I get out of these, or why I read them.
I know that most of my online bloggy friends understand me…
((and believe me, for that, I am eternally grateful to have ya’ll around!))… but my face-to-face peoples just don’t get it.
So, it’s more of a type, then any one book. But, still, “Twilight” itself can be one of those books. Even in the online blogging world, where there are tons of people who do understand why I loved that one, there are still others who shake their heads and groan and just don’t get it (and, no worries — I won’t hold that against you… to each his own, I say).
PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks!

Gifted Hands: The Dr. Ben Carson Story by Dr. Ben Carson is my favorite book. I have never read any of the Twilight books and probably will not for a while. Great book list.

I think most people love Twilight and it is a turning point in their reading as it opens up a whole new aspect that is covered in loads of different genres.

Hi there!
Very interesting question… I found one book hard to mention… a whole genre was much easier lol

Gifted Hands is one of the few autobiographies I’ve read and I LOVED it!!! I think all teenagers about to enter college should read it (I read it in grad school and it really helped shape my outlook on my work ethic). My musing is here
I can understand your family/friends’ disdain for Twilight. I thought that Meyer was a good storyteller but a terrible writer
Personally, I love really depressing books like Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘Never Let Me Go’ – my family doesn’t understand why I like torturing myself with ‘tragic’ books

I like the Gifted Hands book, too! absolutely inspiring!

This was one of the better questions asked for the meme…well done.

I also added some others love and I did not..
Fun topic!
Great post!!! I too am a Twilight lover–It reminded me a lot of the books that I loved in high school (you might want to try L.J. Smith, Cate Tiernan and Christopher Pike)–It really brought me back, and was a different story, at the same time.
What I don’t get is why so many people spend so much time and effort hating–not just Twilight, but anything. I’d rather spend my time with things I enjoy
I have been enjoying Christopher Pike’s “Thirst” series… but thanks for the other recommendations!
Is L.J. Smith who wrote the Vampire Diaries? I haven’t seen the TV show, but I’m tempted to go find episodes of it, as a friend has been posting about the show on her blog, and it sounds good… like something I’d enjoy.
oops, forgot to check the follow-up comments box
I routinely try to get people to read Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin, but they have difficulty getting through the first few pages, because it leads them to think it’s a novel about a horse. Yes, a horse is a major character, but it’s not a novel about a horse. It’s a novel about New York, time and the universe.
I actually have “Winter’s Tale” on my TBR list. I’d found it on a friend’s blog, and it sounded interesting.
So many books belong to this category. My answer is up.

I just suck at giving summaries off the fly. LOL. “Graceling” by Kristin Cashore is one in particular that I never summarize well, but I love to handsell it at my B&N.
