BTT: Heavy
This week’s Booking Through Thursday question asks:
What’s the largest, thickest, heaviest book you ever read? Was it because you had to? For pleasure? For school?
I think my largest, thickest, heaviest book would have to be either The Bible (at 1500 pages), or one I’m not quite finished yet: “Anna Karenina” by Leo Tolstoy (900 pages, but definitely a heavy book!).
I read/am reading both of these for pleasure, only… not for school, or because I had to; just because I wanted to.
I don’t read a lot of “chunky” books ~ or, at least, I haven’t ~ but, I’m starting to lean more towards them, as then you get to stay with the characters for longer. And, when you’re enjoying the story, that can be a good thing!

I keep meaning to read the bible, I’ve read parts but never cover to cover – maybe this year.

Sally.
I have never read Anna K. there are some of the classics I just can’t get into. And also my TBR pile is waiting to be read.
This is one classic you really should try! It’s actually not as hard to read (I’ve found) as some of the others, as the language doesn’t trip you up in this one (other than maybe all of the Russian names… but I get over that by just shortening them! LOL).
I don’t normally dig into the classics, either, but I’m enjoying Anna K. It’s got enough romantic tension and flirting in it to keep me turning pages. Admittedly, there are some parts that really drag (like the ones about Levin and his fields, and his musings), but otherwise, it’s a good book.

The Bible is one I’ve read in full and selectively throughout my life. Last year I read Stephen King’s Under the Dome at 1068 pages–big book, light reading–read just for fun. I likewise read Atlas Shrugged for fun several years ago. Rand’s book is something like 1168 pages. I want to read that one again.
Can’t think of a really big book that I read because I “had” to. For those I’ve tended only to skim and go with something like Cliff notes or my own bluffing through it.

I want to read Anna Karenina one of these days.
I didn’t think about mentioning the Bible — that would be weighty in subject as well as pages. I’ve read it through several times for my own edification. I’m not sure how many pages mine is — I guess it would depend on which one — I’ve had several over the years.
I was a Russian major, so I read Anna twice. It’s probably my favorite of Tolstoy’s novels.

I forgot to say that I’ve too read the bible cover to cover in my response.
Those are two hefty books. Getting to stay with the characters longer is definitely a good reason to choose the longer books. But I also have Gigi Ann’s problem. My TBR list is so long that I get more satisfaction from getting through shorter books.
Well, yeah… there’s that, too. LOL.

The thickest book I have read has to be one of the Harry Potter books. It was like eight hundred something pages long. But now eight hundred pages seems like nothing to me.
