REVIEW: “The Girl in the Gatehouse” by Julie Klassen
Another fantastic Regency-set novel from Julie Klassen!
Mariah Aubrey is a fallen young woman, so she is sent away by her family to live in the gatehouse of Windrush Court, owned by her aunt Fran Prin-Hallsey. There, she meets Captain Matthew Bryant, Lt. William Hart, Mr. Crosby, a handful of residents from the poorhouse next door, and several other friendly characters.
Mariah also uses her time at the gatehouse to work on her secret passion: writing novels under a pseudonym. After all, in those days, women’s writing was seen as inferior to men’s!
But, above all, Mariah learns that all is not lost. She sees how others have gone through trials, and realizes that she’s not alone… she’s not the only one who has made mistakes… and how each one has learned that God is gracious to forgive.
This book totally lived up to my expectations. I’ve only read one other by Julie Klassen, so far, but her writing never disappoints me! I love that, even though it’s a Christian book, you don’t get the dogma preached at you or shoved down your throat, and I love that Julie adds just enough of an edge to the story to make it feel like you’re pushing the boundaries.
Definitely recommended.

I love this book! Actually, I love every book by Julie Klassen, and pick them up at the bookstore, as soon as they come out. My favorite is probably her first, Lady of Milkweed Manor, but they all dig into a certain profession in that era, and we hear details about the lives of governesses, apothecaries, etc… I just looked her up on Amazon, and found out that a new one’s coming out in January. I hope I’ll be able to get it on my Kindle. Don’t have room for actual books, over here. : )
