Musing Mondays (Feb.21)

February 21, 2011

This week’s Musing Mondays post asks…

In honor of the Canadian “Family Day” holiday, today, I’m curious… What was the last book (or, what was your favorite book) that dealt with family? What did you like / dislike about it?

I’ve actually just set aside a book that was dealing with family… “Promises to Keep” by Ann Tatlock is about a now-single mom and her three kids, and how they’ve run away from the father of the family because of his abuse and his alcohol problem.

The book was/is good, but it’s one of those slow-rambling books, and I just wasn’t in the right frame of mind for something like that, at this time.

I also picked up (and put back down, after a few pages) Colleen McCullough’s classic, “The Thorn Birds“. This is another story about family. But, much as those first few pages were good, and it sounds like it’ll be an amazing book, I’m just not ready to read a big, sweeping drama, yet. I can barely finish a SHORT book in 2 weeks, now, let alone trying to read something over 500 pages! LOL

There’ve been many books, in the past, that I enjoyed that dealt with family. One that comes to mind is “Yesterday’s Embers” by Deborah Raney. It’s about a dad raising his brood of six kids. Or, there was “Leave it to Chance” by Sheri Sand, about a single mom raising her three, and how they deal with the recent divorce. Lastly, “Persuasion” by Jane Austen also dealt with family, even though it was mostly about the main character. ;)

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. OMG!!!!–PICK IT BACK UP AGAIN!!!! The Thorn Birds is one of my ABSOLUTE ALL TIME FAVORITES!!!! *SIGH* I’ve read and re-read it so many times!!! The first time I picked it up–I didn’t quite get into it…which might have because I was in 4th grade and had stumbled upon the mini-series (LOVE), which kind of skips over the first section…but when I picked it up again a few years later, I couldn’t put it down!!!! OMG—I want to go read it again right now!!!!!

PLEASE PROMISE you’ll go back to it!!!!!!!

    • LOL… I love your enthusiasm! (perks me back up, since I was depressed about having gotten more snow dumped on us, yesterday!). LOL.

I will definitely pick it back up again, at some point — I promise you that. But, I don’t know if it’ll be right away… we’ll see. It’s still sitting on my bedside shelf.

A good friend of mine recommended I read it; said it was a favorite that I MUST try. ;)

      • Sorry about all the snow–I can sympathize–I used to live in places that had weather. :)

I just realized that I got so distracted by The Thorn Birds, that I missed the questions! –oops! I think The Thorn Birds, has the biggest family I’ve ever read about, and definitely has some interesting family dynamics…which you can read about at your leisure ;)

But I think my favorite “family” story would be “Homecoming” by Cynthia Voight, just the way the siblings had to rely on each other and fight to keep their family together in difficult circumstances–It’s another one of my long-time favorites–I don’t have a MM post, but you can read my review if you want: http://nymfaux.blogspot.com/2010/06/homecoming.html

  2. My MM is here: http://annsreadingcorner.blogspot.com

I enjoyed Persuasion, by Jane Austen also. However, I’ve never read Leave It To Chance, but it sounds like a fun read.

  3. I should try reading The Thorn Birds one day!

  4. Gosh, families are such a BIG topic and at the heart of so many books…HERE is my Musing on the question…

  5. OMG indeed!!! You must, must, MUST pick The Thorn Birds back up again!!! It is a truly wonderful book, one that will sweep you off your feet and you won’t want it to end!!!!

  6. Well – kind of family was the one I am reviewing tomorrow – Sarah Pekkanens new book Skipping A Beat. I really loved it.

  7. I also adored the Thornbirds. The movie was awesome too.

My teaser this week is from Between Here and Forever. I loved this book.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
