BTT: Something Old, Something New

February 24, 2011

This week’s question asks:

All other things being equal–do you prefer used books? Or new books? (The physical speciman, that is, not the title.) Does your preference differentiate between a standard kind of used book, and a pristine, leather-bound copy?

Hmm… Well, I have to say that I lean towards newer books, even though I can’t often buy new. Yes, I’m a book snob. LOL. ;)

Even when I’m buying used books, I look for/prefer ones that are in as good of condition as possible. I don’t like them falling apart, or smelly, or torn. That doesn’t mean I won’t buy torn/smelly/falling apart books — I got the entire Harry Potter series from the library book sales, all hardcovers for $0.25 each, and they’re completely falling apart! (the pages are all there, though, and they’re still readable).

But, yeah… there’s just something about the new books. They smell good, they look pretty, and I feel proud to own them. :D

  1. Great Answer. I love to see what other people think. Here is mine. http://bookskidsanimalsandmore.blogspot.com/2011/02/booking-through-thursday_24.html

  2. I’m not that fussy but looking at my books now a lot of them are new.

  3. I prefer new books. I love a beautiful cover and for some reason get really upset when it is damaged. My mom hates borrowing books from me because she is a notorious book destroyer (dog eared pages, bent covers, cracked spines) and she knows I will call her on it!

  4. I love new books, but I’m really not all that picky about my books. I buy used books as long as they are decent and not falling apart. I always try to pick out the nicest ones though, I guess I may be pickier than I think I am. ; )

  5. I prefer new book as well. I like to think I am the first one to open it, smell it, feel it, leave my mark on it. But I have no problem buying used books as well simply bc I am a book crazy person.

  6. I would definitely prefer a new book. Who knows where that used book has been and what dirty hands were holding it?

  7. I prefer used books – but like you they need to be in good condition. It’s the scrooge in me – I’d rather get five books at $2 each than one book for $10.99. Fortunately the second hand/charity/thrift shops I’ve found as my source of all books tend to have many of the newer titles, just pre-loved! The perfect combination :)

  8. As I’ve said elsewhere, for me it’s the story that matters, not the package. So if I can snag a used copy in good condition, I’ll do that. I said more over at Reading in Texas.

  9. I love books in any form. Since I’m so far behind on new releases I usually settle for used.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
