Musing Mondays (Feb.28)

February 28, 2011

This week’s musing asks…

Which do you prefer: Adult -or- Young Adult books? Or, both? Why?

I honestly prefer to read Young Adult (YA) novels, most of the time. I will still read adult books, too, but more often than not, I lean toward the books that are geared for the younger crowd.

Why? Probably for several reasons, but the biggest one tends to be that YA novels don’t follow the same old, boring format all of the time — or, if they do follow a format, I haven’t yet discovered it, or gotten bored by it! LOL. ;)

By “same old format” (in adult books), I mean this: Woman has left her hometown to pursue a better life, and get away from something. But, eventually she’s called back to her hometown because a family member is sick and she needs to either care for them, or attend their funeral. Then she inherits her childhood home, so is forced to stay. And, while there, she runs into a handsome old acquaintance (enemy?), and they end up getting together and falling in love. And, then all is right with the world.

And, if it’s not the above storyline, it ends up being about a single parent dealing with raising kids on his/her own, and then falling in love again and living happily ever after.

I’m really tired of the same old thing.

Yes, I know that this is what sells. Because it’s relateable (sp?). People go through this sort of thing, so they can relate to it, and it speaks to them. Wonderful. But, for me, it doesn’t work. I’ve read it too many times. I need something fresh, and original… and different.

And, that’s more than likely why I choose the YA books… and, lean a lot toward the fantasy genre, too. They’re different, and exciting, and never follow the exact same plot lines.

But, I don’t always pick the fantasy books, either. I just like the  YA storylines. And, maybe another reason for that is because I still find myself relating better to the teen years than to the adult years. Yes, I’m in my early thirties, but I still don’t feel “grown up”, most of the time! LOL. I like the teenage drama: the angst, the adrenaline rush of a new crush, the love stories. Maybe because reading about this stuff doesn’t remind me of my own life (bills to pay, kids who won’t get along, meetings with teachers, jobs that make you exhausted…), and instead are truly an “escape” for me… ((wow — an “aha!” moment for me there! Didn’t realize that was a reason! LOL)).

So, yeah… That’s my preference. ;)

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

    • Hmmm… You make me think that maybe I just need to branch out a bit more — find “adult” books that don’t fall into the “same old plot”… there’ve got to be SOME out there SOMEwhere, right?

      LOL. Thanks! :P

  5. Mostly I read Young Adult novels and one can see that by looking at my blog http://www.bookautopsy.wordpress.com . But I also read adult books too like books by Jodi Picoult and others.

  10. This is a really interesting question. I like both, for different reasons.

I have only ever read YA paranormal or fantasy books and the reason I like them is that adult sci-fi and fantasy seems to ALWAYS have graphic sex and or violence. While a little is okay, with an adult novel you never know when it’s coming or how bad it will be. There’s no fear of that with a YA novel.

I enjoyed reading your reasons, I hadn’t thought of that and since I mostly read sci-fi or fantasy, never experienced it.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
