REVIEW: “God Between the Covers” by Marcia Ford
If you like books about books (and reading), you’d really enjoy this book. Well, I guess you’d have to have some of an interest in God, too, but this isn’t a preachy book, so it’s not like you have to believe it all to read this, either.
This book is basically half-memoir about Marcia’s spiritual progress ~ journeying from seeker to committed believer ~ and half-recommendations. Marcia gives a run-down on books that have impacted her through the years, and helped to grow her faith.
I loved how much I could relate to Marcia! We seem to be kindred spirits, as I could have written so much of what she wrote about how she felt regarding religion, etc. And, there were many, many books in here that I’ve already read, or that I own, or that I’d already had on my TBR (to be read) list for later.
I also found a slew of new books to add to my TBR list, too (look for those in next week’s edition of Friday Finds!
).
Some of the book recommendations included: Dostoyevsky’s “Crime & Punishment” | “The Hound of Heaven” by Francis Thompson | “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” by Martin Luther King, Jr. | “The Imitation of Christ” by Thomas à Kempis | “Praying the Scriptures” by Judson Cornwall | “A New Kind of Christian” by Brian McLaren | “Original Self” by Thomas Moore | …and many others!
And, of course, there were bookish quotes, like the following, that just had me nodding my head in complete understanding:
“As a book reviewer, a judge for several book awards, and a writer for a publishing trade magazine, I need do no more than answer the door to acquire more books than I could read in their entirety in a lifetime. FedEx and UPS long ago gave up ringing my doorbell; under our standing agreement, they just drop and run.” ~ pg.11-12
So, yeah. This is a great book, and I highly recommend it. I’m going off to see if the library will also get me a copy of Marcia’s other book, “Memoir of a Misfit“, ’cause I have a feeling I’ll relate to that one even better!
Rated: B+

Ohhh, I DO like books about books and I love the spiritual aspect of this one. I hadn’t heard of it until now. Thanks for the introduction! On my TBR list it goes!!
