Musing Mondays (May 2)

May 2, 2011

This week’s musing asks…

Do you care if the book’s storyline is unrealistic? Will you keep reading, or will you set the book aside?

I really can’t stand it if a book has an unrealistic storyline. If the characters aren’t being true-to-life, I’ll more than likely try to keep suffering through, but I might reach a point where I just decide the book isn’t worth my time and I’ll set it aside.

I can think of a book or two where I’ve had to do this (not actual titles or authors, but I can remember feeling like the books were just too “fake” to keep me interested). It’s really disappointing.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. I can understand your feelings of wanted to put the book down… I think I have felt that in the past but I look at it a little differently now.

  2. I’m italian, I don’t know if you’ll understand this!

  3. I prefer that ‘my reads’ make sense within the context of their own worlds. So, if it’s fantasy or science fiction, there can be plenty of impossible things! But, I expect a good author to be gentle with the ‘baton of exposition’. “Hey, mom, can I read my homework out loud to you? I have to explain why the world is like this.” Afterwards, there has to be more to the story than just the nifty situation – I want interesting characters to do interesting things and react interestingly. :) In that case, I can forgive a bit of blah-blah.

Clumsy exposition: when characters then just happen to explain the whole world out loud on page 30, so that the reader knows what is going on. Hammered, by Elizabeth Bear, had a brutal example of this. It was so bad that I just skipped it. But, I kept going and enjoyed the rest of the book.

  4. I definitely do not like unrealistic books, my answer why is found here: http://annsreadingcorner.blogspot.com

  5. I agree- character need to be true-to-life and events in the plot have to be logical!

  6. After carefully consideration…I think it depends…as I tried to explain in My Post.

I like books to be properly researched,i.e in historical ficton no rewriting history to suit !{which Hollywood and some American authors tend to do!} I loath what hollywood does to history.
I like them to make sence and i can spot errors or rewrites very quickly .
I have said before that the “I don’t care for details” when i see on blogs gets that blogger “unfollowed”! When it can take author 2-3 years to research it really annoys me.

  8. Unrealistic means also unbelievable characters.
    My musing is posted.

  9. I hate it, when the storyline is not realistic or when something is missing. Sometimes I stop reading (though I hate it to leave a book unfinished) but when the writing style is ok an the story interesting and full with tension I read it. Sometimes the story is good, also when the storyline is unrealistic.

  10. I have been there – I’ve put a book down, or gone back to the home menu on my kindle, when the story is too far out there. I love SciFi-Fantasy and Paranormal Romance so my problem isn’t with the story being to fantastic, but when the author’s created universe seems to not follow any rules it bugs me. If you can’t write your way out of the plot you wrote don’t be lazy and change everything or throw in a “And Johnny discovered in that moment that he could freeze time and everything was better!”

  11. I’m a bit late today, but here’s my response…

  12. That’s kind of a tough question. Check out my answer at: magicisinwords.blogspot.com

  13. Oh, goodness, if it’s outlandishly, purposely off base, like vampires and angels, I can handle it. If it’s just a bunch of random, out there events or actions of normal, every day people that I need to pass off as possible, I’ll be less likely to swallow it, I think.

  14. If the book isn’t sci-fi or fantasy or something else along that line, I like the book to be realistic. If it’s not, it doesn’t seem to resonate with me as much.

This is my first Teaser Tueday… It was fun… thank you

  16. I read to escape. I need to get lost in a book. If it’s unrealistic, it’s no point in reading further. I will not hesitate to put a book down.

  17. Bit late to this party, but better than never… http://wp.me/p1t7Ho-bq

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
