REVIEW: “The 6 Most Important Decisions You’ll Ever Make” by Sean Covey

May 19, 2011

I got this book out of the library because I am hoping to have my son read it — he’s 13 yrs old. But, before letting him read it, I wanted to preview it for myself, to be sure it’s appropriate and that the values inside match up with my own.

Sure enough, while it’s written mostly for those in high-school, my 13-yr-old will probably still get a lot out of it, and I believe it will actually be better for him to read it now, as it will help him be prepared for what’s to come.

The book talks about the 6 key areas of decision for young people:

• School
• Friends
• Parents
• Dating & Sex
• Addictions
• Self-Worth

Sean’s other book, “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens“, is also touched on throughout, as he brings the 7 Habits to play in each of the six decision areas.

I liked that Sean’s values weren’t in opposition to my own. And, I loved that the whole book is very motivating and encouraging. He lets teens know that they are able to control how they react to life, and that making wise choices will get them further than making unwise choices will. He shows the differences between both, and how it’s better to take the “high road” in each of the key areas.

I can’t recommend this book enough to teens, and to parents of teens — or anyone who has guardianship / influence over a teen, really! Like I said, it’s aimed at teens ages 14-19 yrs, but I think it’s even good enough for 12 yrs + to read, as it will give them a head-start (hopefully) in choosing wisely.

Excellent resource! Rated: B+

((now, let’s hope that I can convice my son to read through the whole thing! ;) ))

  1. Thanks for this, it is timely for me.

  2. I’m a young adult librarian, and I have to say that this book, as well as his over book for teens, are always on high school’s summer reading lists.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
