BTT: Size Matters

June 30, 2011

This week’s Booking Through Thursday question asks…

What’s the largest your personal library has ever been? What’s the greatest number of books you’ve ever owned at one time? (Estimates are fine.)

Is your collection NOW the biggest it’s ever been? Or have you down-sized?

What’s the fewest number of books you’ve ever owned (not counting your pre-reading years)?

The largest my collection has been was about 1250 books (give or take). But, because I was running out of room in my tiny house, I had to downsize a bit. So I went through and got rid of 4 boxes worth (approximately 200 books)… ones I didn’t feel I’d ever get to, mostly ones I got given to me in boxes via Freecycle.org.

The smallest my library ever was was probably about 10-20 books. That was before I got “book crazy” in my early twenties, and started dreaming of having my own in-home, personal “library” (a room full of beautiful built-ins, stuffed with books!).

My current total (according to my LibraryThing.com account ~ which I keep updated) is 1140 books. But, that doesn’t include the 8 books I’ve recently ordered that will be arriving soon (6 of them, hopefully, today!). ;)

My "some day" dream... (my shelves will be FULL of books, though!)

  1. Yes, don’t all of us bookish types dream of a room that is filled with books? Our library? Instead, many of us settle for books in all of our rooms! Here’s MY BTT POST

  2. I’m afraid to count my number of books at this point…mainly because a lot of them are on my TBR pile.

I swear that thing grows daily….

  3. I’m trying desperately to give away books. When I empty a shelf, I give away the shelf. Not that any of that is helping….

Hope you are well. Haven’t stopped by your blog in a long, long time….I have no idea why!

Ubiquitous…that’s books for me…Booking Through Thursday: Size Matters.

  4. That’s my dream, too! Someday, someday…

  5. I don’t keep my books, unless they are special, like a signed copy. When I am done reading them, I donate them to the local library or school library.

  6. It’s hard to say since I have so many books in my garage, but an offhand estimate would be close to 2000 books. It’s the most I’ve probably ever had at one time. There is no fewest amount as since my first books in childhood I have continued to add more. Through yard sales, giveaways, and donations I’ve gotten rid of many books that I thought I didn’t care so much about, but now I wish I had some of those back. Unless I would get a bigger house with more book storage I will probably have to continue to downsize as I accumulate more new books.

  10. Hi just found you when I was searching for reviews of Redeeming love. And well I hope you don’t mind if I quote you! …I had friends who were horrified too! I just read it and I am writing a review.
I enjoyed finding you. I’ll be back. Come by and see me!

  11. It was right around 2000 books before The Great Purge of Ought Five, when I got rid of about 500 books, then I accumulated nearly another 200 before the Great Purge of Ought Nine when I tried to get rid of again about 500 books, but most of them are still in boxes in the office because my local library couldn’t take them all at that time. I keep meaning to try again & never get around to it

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
