Musing Mondays (Aug.15)

August 15, 2011

This week’s musing asks…

Do you like looking at other people’s bookshelves?

If I see a bookshelf of books, I have to stop and look. I can’t help myself. I’m drawn to it. Even when I’m looking through a home-design book, or a magazine — if I see a bookshelf, I have to stick my nose in really close to try and read the titles on the spines, and see what those people are interested in reading! LOL

It’s always a weird feeling. On the one hand, it feels like you’re snooping into someone’s personal life. But, on the other, you know it’s not really that personal, so you’re allowed to look. LOL

Looking at someone else’s bookshelf can tell you a lot about who that person is… what they like. But, it’s not so much for that reason that I like to look at others’ bookshelves… in fact, I’m not sure that’s a reason for me to look at all! I just like looking because there could be something in there that I’d like to read! LOL. My next Top 10 could be hiding in there! (I’ll write down the title, and then go look it up at the library, or at the bookstore). Or, I might find something there that I’ve already read, and it gives me something to discuss with the owner of said bookshelf.

For me, it’s all about my love of reading, and my need to find more books to read. ;)

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. I don’t care if I seem to be a snoop. I just trying to learn more about you if I’m perusing your bookshelf or music collection. I want to see what we have in common and what things that interest you that I might want to learn more about. The visual tour is just a non-verbal part of the conversation. And please, when you come to visit me feel free to look and my books, CDs, and DVDs. If I didn’t want people to see them I wouldn’t put them out in the open.

I love looking at other people’s bookshelves. I’ll even take books down & look them. I figure if the bookshelf is in a main area it’s open for looking & touching. I wouldn’t do it with the bedroom bookshelf, but certainly the living room or kitchen bookshelf

  5. I love my friends’ bookshelves! Great question this week (:

  6. Love to see what other people are reading. I have gone as far as to scope out their books without permission :)

  8. I <3 bookshelves, SO MUCH. Here's my extended answer (w/ a link that all bookshelf lovers must see!): Reading in the Corner

  9. How is it possible not to want to look? http://wp.me/p1t7Ho-mr

  10. Bookshelves are the first things you looked at when you were visiting a new person’s dorm room, and it’s the same after you graduate. We had people housesitting for us in 1999, and they commented at length on my books. Of course, a lack of books is just as telling.

  11. I like to look at others bookshelves if a go to someone’s house. I guess I’m just curious to see what type of books they like to find out more about them. On Shelfari I like to see who read the same books as I did.

Great question. I think we are all kindred spirits! :) Here’s my MM.

  13. I’m with you on this one. I love snooping to see what other people are reading!

  14. Yeah, I find myself drawn to a book shelf whenever I see one. Hahaha. I guess I’m interested what my friends are reading or have read and hopefully, we can swap books in their collections that I find interesting.

  15. I love looking at other peoples book shelves. It gives me insight into their book tastes, things we might have in common, who they are as a person, and like you said possibly a good book recommendation. I find I am also very selective with what books I put on my more viewed bookshelves as I want to make a good impression.

  16. Hi MizB,

I agree entirely with your post. I can’t pass by a bookshelf, no matter where it may be, without stopping to look.

In other people’s houses, it is always good to see the kind of books that they enjoy reading, always a good conversation breaker, unless of course theirs is a house where the books are only for show and are never actually read!!

There are so many other places where random bookshelves are springing up these days, such as pubs and hospitals and even here I have to have a quick look, just in case there is a bargain just waiting with my name on it.

We actually know quite a few people who don’t have a bookshelf of any description in the house, and I still can’t see how that is possible? I can’t imagine a house without books!

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
