REVIEW: “Grace for the Good Girl” by Emily Freeman

September 8, 2011

Emily has a way with words. And, I love it! That’s why I’ve been enjoying reading her blog for quite some time, and why I was so thrilled to be able to get a copy of her new book for review!

Inside this book, Emily talks about the ‘masks’ we Christian gals wear that make us feel in control and self-sufficient, the ‘masks’ we wear to hide when things don’t go the way we think they should. But, we aren’t free.

Jesus has come so that we don’t have to wear those masks any more, and instead, we can hide ourselves in Him. We need to learn to let go, and let Him live His life through us.

I really enjoyed this book. So much so, that I think I’d like to get copies of it for both my mom and my sister, too! And, I’ll probably re-read mine at some point (it’s full of underlining, right now, so I can’t loan it out. LOL).

If you want to check out Emily’s blog for yourself, it’s called Chatting At the Sky.

  1. I just checked out the blog and it is wonderful! I will be keeping an eye out for the book too. It sounds like it has a message many of us need to read!

  2. I still have a personal conflict with accepting this type of faith. I do believe that Jesus Christ uplifts and saves many lives, but I also believe that people can do good without religion. People can be self-sufficient without certain types of faith. And people can be good who are lost and trying to find ways of getting help.

There is a lot of good in this world. We aren’t “nothing.” We are always something.

    What do you think?

    Write well,
    Robin Quinn

    • Robin, I think Christianity has been given a really bad name/reputation over the years, because it’s been very rules-based, and full of “religion”. It’s supposed to be about relationship… Jesus wants us to know Him fully, and wants us to trust Him for our everyday living.

That’s what I meant when I wrote that we wear masks of “self-sufficiency”. We try to do it all ourselves, but God says in John 15:5, “…for apart from Me, you can do nothing“.

I certainly agree with you that we are not “nothing” — we are something! We are loved & accepted as we are. We don’t have to earn our acceptance. But, Emily’s book talks about how we often TRY to earn our acceptance, when really, we don’t have to — we have it just because we exist.

      Thanks for your thoughts!

      • I think I can agree with this response. :) Thank you very much for responding. It’s always helpful to have a better understanding.

      • I agree with your response. And such is living in a world that is “fallen”. As Proverbs 3:5-6 says, we are to trust in the Lord and not lean on our own understanding and that we are to submit to him and he will make the path straighter. While life will always be difficult and have struggle, trusting in God can make things easier. And its a constant struggle.

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
