Musing Mondays (Oct.17)

October 17, 2011

This week’s musing asks…

Do you judge a book by its cover?

I do, I’ll admit. If the cover sucks, I usually won’t even pick the book up (or, look at it on Amazon) unless someone has told me to check it out. Of course, there are the few exceptions, but most of the time, this is the way it works for me.

The same is also true the other way around… if the cover is gorgeous, I can’t help but pick up the book (or open up the description on Amazon) and read more about it. And if I like the sounds of it from the description, too, it gets added to my to-be-read list. ;)

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

    Sometimes!

There are some that just turn me off, and some subjects don’t grab me either.
    More subject related than cover.

  2. I am the same way. Here’s My Musing Monday’s post.

  3. I am guilty of this also. If I had not started doing reviews by authors request I probably would not have read their book because the cover did not appeal to me and they turned out to be very good reads. So I have more than likely missed out on some good reads because I did not like the cover. But I have found some with amazing covers that I just had to have the book and then I did not enjoy the book. So as the old saying goes, “You can’t judge a book by it’s cover.”

  4. same here/i think is a marketing stunt , horrible books the best covers available to use

  5. I agree, I get attracted by nice covers.

My MM should be up around 12:00 am EST standard time Monday, October 17. It will be here.

  6. Totally agree. I have such a hard time committing if I can’t get sucked in!

    Check out our MM here:

  7. There are so many books out there, it’s almost impossible to NOT judge a book by its cover. I think that quote should apply more to people, nowadays, not judging them on their looks or how they dress. But I’m always tell people to not judge a book by its genre. Hey, if the publishers are too lazy to make a good cover, you know the sales may not happen as quickly.

  9. I’m attracted to nice covers, but don’t get turned off if the covers aren’t good. My response is over at Girlxoxo

  10. I am also guilty of this book crime and am especially swayed by lovely editions of books I know I like, despite already owning copies of the titles. I blogged about doing it and the publishing trends in book covers a few months ago myself, so I’ll link that as my response :) : http://readitribbit.blogspot.com/2011/08/judging-book-by-its-cover.html

Excellent musings post as I’m sure we’ve all done it before!

  11. I agree with you. My MM is here

Gotta love the shiny book covers! Here’s my post: http://emmegailsbookshelf.wordpress.com/2011/10/17/musing-monday-oct-17th/

  14. A cover has never discouraged me from reading a book, but it has definitely encouraged me! Here’s my musing: http://www.romanticlovebooks.com/home/2011/10/17/musing-mondays-do-you-judge-a-book-by-its-cover.html

  15. Great question. I think it’s a combo of title-cover-summary for me, but cover does influence how excited I am to read a novel.

  16. Here’s my response to this weeks Musing. I totally judge, I can’t help it.

  17. Awesome topic! Here’s mine!

  19. As an artist, I am attracted to book covers that grab my attention. I will certainly pick up a book that has caught my attention because of the cover. But it doesn’t always mean that it is a good read.

  20. I always do and it becomes a second nature to identify books that align to my interest. My full answer is up.

  21. Yes. I loved this first time author’s book cover for The Mediocre Housewife! The book is awesome, too.

  22. Ugh, how many times have I got burnt by this exact thing! I am so guilty of this even though I know that a beautiful cover does not necessarily reflect quality content and vice versa. I am always giving away books that I bought that look pretty on my shelf but that I can’t get more than 1/3 of the way through reading.

  23. I think we all do it. The cover is the first thing that catches our eye, then we examine the title, then the synopsis. If it interests us(this varies) then we buy/check it out. The book “Briar Rose” I first interested me because the cover image was cool and the title had the word “Rose” in it and I love roses. I read the synopsis and it sounded interesting. So I bought it.

  24. I feel like it’s hard not to judge a book by its cover, I think everyone does it to some extent. There are so many books in the world, you have to narrow down the ones your going to read one way or another, and the cover is very helpful in doing that.

  25. I do buy books relaying on the cover :P I mean if I really like a cover and the title, I’m gonna definitely buy the book. But then again on goodreads I mostly go see the comments and then see if I’ll read the book. Sometimes happens that the cover suxs but the book is amazing – like The Hunger Games – I mean the cover was nothing special just black with the bird and the title on it. But the story was OMG :) So yeah happens sometimes, but then I guess is even more cool to be surprised about the story that you never tought would be that great.

    Happy reading,
    nea

Please be patient if your comment doesn't show up right away... I will 'release' it as soon as I can. Thanks for your thoughts! ~MizB
