Musing Mondays (Oct.24)

October 24, 2011

This week’s musing asks…

Do you listen to audiobooks? Why, or why not?

I have tried to listen to audiobooks, but I just don’t have the concentration for them. I find myself having to rewind or backtrack over and over again, ’cause my mind will have drifted.

That’s not to say I haven’t listened to any. I enjoyed “Their Eyes Are Watching God” by Zora Neale Hurston, and “‘A’ is for Alibi” by Sue Grafton, and “Brunswick Gardens” by Anne Perry. But those are the only audiobooks I’ve been able to get through.

PLEASE LEAVE A COMMENT with either the link to your own Musing Mondays post, or share your answer in a comment here (if you don’t have a blog). Thanks! :D

  1. Hey all! check out our Musing Mondays !

  2. I understand the mind drifting while listening. But, my biggest trouble is others wanting to visit. So it so distracting to be turning the CD player on and off.

  3. Yeah, I’m not really a big fan of audiobooks either. I just really love actual books too much I think. I feel like listening to audiobooks loses a lot of the mystery involved in reading something to myself.

    Here’s My Musing!

Also! I’m giving away an audiobook for Glow by Amy Kathleen Ryan right now on my blog, so this musing is definitely appropriate!

  4. Hey! I just started participating in your meme. It’s awesome! Great question! Please check mine out: http://hm-viewsnreviews.blogspot.com/2011/10/musing-mondays-1.html

  7. I love audiobooks! I listen to them when working out, nothing like a good murder mysery to keep you focused while on the treadmill, much better than dance music IMO. I also listen to them while cleaning the house, cooking dinner, crocheting or doing cross stitch. They let me combine my love of reading with the things I have to do or want to do. Not to mention they are life savers while taking long trips.

DH and I will be listening to Terry Pratchett’s Men at Arms while traveling over Thanksgiving. He loves Discworld but his reading time is very limited by his long working hours & audiobooks let him still ‘read’.

  8. My answer is similar. The whole response is posted here

  10. I almost always have an audiobook in the car. I get them from the library so if it doesn’t grab my attention I can exchange it.

  11. Great question! My answer is up on my blog.

    Happy reading

  12. Sense & Sensibility & Sea Monsters killed by enthusiasm for audio books http://thecharacterconnection.blogspot.com/2011/10/musing-monday_24.html

  13. I listening to audio books for almost 15 years, but now not as often as I used to since there’s things as podcasts to take up my aural time. I love listening to audio books to help me go to sleep. Listening to audio books also allows me to listen to a book while working. When my daughters were babies, I would listen to audio books when they woke up for their 12, 2 and 4 o’clock feedings. Audio books helped me get through some of the older classics which were easier to follow than reading them like Jane Eyre and Frankenstein. Sometimes I’ll read both the hard cover and the audio book at the same time so I can alternate.

  14. I love this site and your Musing Mondays prompts. Just started answering them on my blog recently, and this is my first time checking in. My post today: http://etjrmbach.blogspot.com/2011/10/listening-to-your-favorite-novel.html.

Thanks for the wonderful prompts and discussion opportunities!

  16. I just can’t do it. Here’s my Musing Monday

  17. I do read audio books, but not terribly often. My full Musing Monday: raesamm.blogspot.com

  18. Just found out about this today! I do listen to audios quite often in my car as I prefer this over the radio, which can tend to work my nerves with repetition. I am currently listening to Life as We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer. I just finished Wolfsbane by Andrea Cremer, though I admit I read the last few pages because listening was taking too long.

  19. Funny, as I’ve been reading through the comments, I’m surprised at the number of readers who can’t quite get into audio books either….

  21. I used to listen to audiobooks but my life nowadays is so pressed for time, I read so much faster when it’s just me and my book.
