The Sunday Salon (Nov.20)
I’m a little peeved… I’ve been thinking about blogging etiquette, the last few days, thanks to a Freshly Pressed blog post I’d read on the topic. And, then I came across an incident, personally, which had me ruffled.
While I am a bit flattered that people like my ideas for my memes (Musing Mondays, Teaser Tuesdays, WWW Wednesdays, and Friday Finds), I get a little ticked off when someone uses the same idea… but then fails to credit me. Is that really so much to ask? I mean, I always try to credit people whose stuff I use, so don’t I deserve the same courtesy? In my humble opinion, it just seems like the polite thing to do… you want to use my buttons, or copy my memes? I don’t mind — so long as you give credit where it’s due! Don’t just go copying my idea and then calling it your own. That, to me, is rude.
I had someone, just this week, who was polite enough to ask me if they could copy my buttons onto their blog’s sidebar… and I very much appreciated their asking for permission! Not that I need everyone to ask me, mind you. If you credit me, or link back to my blog, I’m obviously not going to get snarky about it. But, it’s when no link back or credit is given at all… the person almost seems to be pretending the meme/button is their own idea. That’s what ticks me off.
((huff)) Okay, okay… rant over.
Anyhoo… On to sunnier topics! Like this article I found (“Battle of the Book“) via a friend’s sharing it on Facebook, the other day! It gives the benefits of printed books over e-Readers. I liked this article, very much!
I’m still reading “Lifestyle Choices…Up to YOU!” by Ginger Woods O’Shea. But, I’m almost finished it. I had to skip through a chapter-and-a-half, as they were just too lagging… I was falling asleep. Now we’re into the more interesting bits. It’s a book that requires quite a bit of brain-power to read through, but it’s definitely got some interesting points, and some stuff that I’m going to be taking and applying to my own life (and health).
Speaking of health, it seems like everyone around me is sick with a cold, right now! Both of my bosses are coughing like crazy, my own son has been out of school two days this week with his cold, and then you have all the patients coming into the office who are sick, too. Not fun to be around all of those germs! But, what can you do?
Yesterday, I blogged about my reading goals for 2012… to cut back on the number of places I log my books, and to possibly not join or host any reading challenges. Given that my time is severely limited now, I’m just losing interest in the reading challenges, and in doing anything that takes up a great deal of time that I could spend on reading.
I’m also still on a hiatus from reviewing… to an extent. But, I’ve requested a few review books. From NetGalley, I couldn’t help but ask for these: “Deadly Little Secret” by Laurie Faria Stolarz (wanted to read this for a while), “Gospel” by J. D. Greear, and “The Guardian Duke” by Jamie Carie (loved the cover — and it’s a regency novel!). Then, through FIRST Wild Card Tours, I found a book called “Ten: How Would You Rate Your Life?” by Terry A. Smith — I really can’t wait to get a copy of this one! It sounds fantastic!
Here’s the description of “TEN” by Terry A. Smith [from www.livingten.com]…
Whether we’re in the depths of a crisis or riding the wave of success and blessing, we all desire a life that’s better than the one we’re living now. We all want more – more fulfillment, more joy, more satisfaction, more significance. So on a scale of one to ten, how do you rate your life? A “six”? Maybe a “seven”? Not bad, but what if you could be living a TEN? Would you risk doing things differently, dare to look at your circumstances from a different perspective in order to achieve the life that awaits you? In TEN, Terry Smith offers you the pathway to living a TEN life. TEN is not just another self-help book. On the contrary, this book shows you a clear and compelling path that takes you beyond “self-help” to experience the fulfillment of “others-help”. Smith shows you how to master the essential bond between getting better at your life and helping others get better at theirs. TEN will challenge you to become the leader God created you to be. By creating your preferred future, you’ll be impacting not just your own life, but the lives of those around you, and even the lives of people you haven’t even met yet. Don’t settle. Whether you rate the life you’re living now as a two, a five, or a seven, now is the time to start living a TEN!
This sounds like a really good book!
Lastly, I’m still on a graphic design kick. I’m seriously pursuing the possibility of becoming a web designer. I’m saving up to buy a laptop (as I mentioned before), and am hoping to get a copy of Adobe’s Creative Suite 5 Web Premium, eventually. I’d like to design web sites and blogs for people, as I have a passion for working with my own sites. I can lose myself for hours in designing buttons and such, or –as shown recently– in choosing background designs for my blog. I figure, if I get the right tools, and then spend enough time practicing my skills, I can maybe even get good enough to make this a work-from-home endeavor. We shall see.

Jenn – I am so with you on the crediting your idea thing. I am on a bit of a rant this morning myself – it seems like there is so much crap right now – people not giving full disclosure on their blogs/websites for being paid for certain things (like book giveaways), people stealing ideas and then taking them as their own, plagiarism, etc…The bigger our community gets, the more of this I see. It makes me mad. It makes me sad. I guess the only thing we can do is to continue to hold ourselves to a higher standard, make sure we are preserving our integrity, and realize that not everyone will follow.
Thanks for your thoughts, Wendy. You’re absolutely right… we need to hold ourselves to a higher standard. If we don’t, no one will.
I always give full credit to you for the meme’s when i take part ,both by naming yourself and linking to your blog.
MizB can i please put a button for your blog on my blog?
