The Sunday Salon (Jan.6)
One week of the year already gone. Wow.
I’ve finished one book for the year, already — “Radical Well-Being” by Rita Hancock, M.D. It was a decent read, and would be good for anyone who deals with frequent or consistent physical pain in their life, as Dr. Rita is a pain-management doctor, and she shares what she does in her practice to help relieve her patients.
I’m now reading “The Art Forger” by B. A. Shapiro, and am enjoying it, so far.
I’m a little bummed, this week, as I have two days left of work, and then that job is finished, and I will be looking for work, again. I really liked this job, and the quiet office. But, I knew my time there was limited, as it was a maternity leave, so it wasn’t going to last forever.
I wish with-all-my-heart that I was in a position to be able to work for myself, already. But, I’m not yet. First off, because I want to do graphic and web design, and I haven’t learned what I need to learn for that, just yet. One of my goals for this year, though, is to read one graphic/web design book each month, for a total of 12 books this year, so that I can put myself closer toward that goal.
Second, we’re not in a great place, financially, so starting my own business right now isn’t a viable option. We can’t take that risk. So, it’s back out on the hunt, I go.
If I could chance it right now, I would try my hand at consulting. I want to be a small business consultant/advisor, as it’s something that I know a lot about — both from having read a lot of books on the subject, and from my job that’s just ending. And, I feel that there’s a need out there… people starting their own businesses have a ton of questions, and I’d like to help them get the answers they need!
I also would like to offer classes on blogging — teach people how to set one up, and how to build up their readership, etc. I love the thought of this, as there are tons of people out there who want to know how to do this, but are scared silly at the prospect… and I love to share what I’ve learned, so far, in my 7 or so years of blogging.
I may do this, anyway… see if I get any nibbles. Can’t hurt while I’m job-hunting, right? If I made a little money on the side, it’d be a bonus!
My sister is trying to convince us to move closer to her — about twenty hours away from where we are now. And, it’s a bittersweet thought. On the one hand, I’d love to move, as we could get a bigger house (I am tired of having no storage space!), and I could be closer to my sister, and I’d have better job opportunities, and my husband could get a job in the field he just went back to school for… But, on the other hand, I would be leaving behind my friends, and I wouldn’t get to go hear my favorite band play any more, and I’d have to find a new church… I don’t like those ideas at all. I don’t really think we’ll move, mind you, as it’s always something we think we’ll do, and then we don’t end up doing it. Besides, I’m not sure we want to take my boy out of his new school, or my daughter out of her’s. It’d have to be a super-good opportunity if we were going to jump at it, I think. It’s a huge thing!
Anyway. For now, we are where we are, and I’m going to have some time to read while I do the job search. I’m hoping to finish the book I’m reading, plus get in the two other review books that I’ve got scheduled for this month: “Vanished” by Irene Hannon, and “The Tutor’s Daughter” by Julie Klassen. Then, I have two books scheduled for review in February, as well: “The Emotionally Healthy Woman” by Geri Scazzero, and “Calling Me Home” by Julie Kibler {links to all of these can be found on my Blog Tours page, if you want to know more}. I’m looking forward to all of them, as they sound really good!
Happy Reading, everyone!

I wish you well in your job search. Your idea about a blog class is a great idea.
Will be praying and thinking of you.

Will be praying that God Blesses you with a way to start your own business.
Good luck in your job search. I think your blog classes would be good. I would take one on building readership for sure. I may have been blogging a while but can always use tips on that front
I wish you well with your job search, I think we’ve all been there. The idea of blog classes for some extra money definitely sounds like a good idea, you should give that a try.
I know how you feel with the moving dilemma. I was in a similar situation last year, but I’m hoping to move to Wales, from England, this year to be closer to family.
Thank you, everyone! I especially appreciate the encouragement regarding the blogging classes… I feel really positive about this idea, and am working on putting together something for a class!
I will be putting up a post to get some ideas, too… stay tuned!
