If You Took A ‘How to Blog’ Class…
Hey, folks… I mentioned in this week’s “The Sunday Salon” post about how I’m thinking of trying my hand at teaching Blogging classes, locally. I am really excited by this idea, too!
But, I wonder if I can get your help, please?
If you were to take a “Blogging Basics” class, what sorts of topics would you like to see covered?
I am considering doing two (2) separate classes: one for those who just want to know how to do personal blogging, and another for business owners who want to start a blog to help them market themselves. So, anything that would fall under these two headings would be game.
What would you want to learn?
{Thanks in advance!}

Wow, that’s a great idea. I’ve been blogging only for the past two weeks. I don’t know if this counts, but one thing I still haven’t figured out is how to use plugins. It looks complicated to me.
Sure it counts! Thank you!
for the small business owners – linking facebook, linkedin and the blog. Ideas on how often to post, how to link them all, ideas on how to get followers etc. I am helping my friend keep her blog alive…she started it, but has no time to keep it going. It is a big time committment and I dont’ think a lot of small biz owners realize that!
My sister — who, herself, owns a business — recommended that I teach “how to write a blog post in 10 minutes a day” for business owners… because she knows how busy they can be, and how little time they have to devote to things like blogging!
Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions!
That is an AWESOME idea!
Question for clarification — you wrote, “Ideas on how often to post, how to link them all…” What do you mean by “link them all”? All what? the posts?
Thanks!
oh sorry, link all of the social media sites to your blog, facebook, twitter any others they might use, certain ones should definitely have a pinterest page. I know that is moving beyond the blog, but they almost all go together, at least for small biz
Starting next Wednesday, I am taking a class through ed2go.com on creating/managing a WordPress blog. If it would be helpful, I would be willing to share the syllabus.
That’s so sweet of you! If you care to, I’d love to see the syllabus — feel free to email me here. Thanks so much!
How to put your header on and write blog posts would be a great starting point. Also how to keep Anonymous comments off your blog.
I have been having so much trouble with Anonymous comments. I finally got it fixed.
Best of luck with your new endeavor. You will do a great job.
Thank you for your suggestions!
Wow! These are all great suggestions. I really like the 10 minute post idea.
I used to be able to automatically link my posts to Facebook. is there an easier way than putting your link in the status?
I also have 2 blogs, can I link them?
Good suggestions! Thanks!
The questions I had the most when I started blogging were about formatting. How can I add follow buttons, html, pictures, etc. Basically, how can I make it look like and function like the other blogs I’ve seen. It took me months of looking through the web to get my blog to look the way I wanted and have the features I wanted it to have. Also, linking to social networking is another huge thing. I wish I’d known about Networked Blogs a year ago!
The other major question is how to get original content out there. For book bloggers, it’s easy, I think, because of the memes and covers and releases and reviews we can write. I never run out of content. But I know it’s a problem in other blogging communities to come out with content often. Those are all things I would’ve loved to learn when I first started. =)
Thank you so much! I agree on the “How can I make it look like what I’ve seen?”… that’s where I was coming from, too.
Never be afraid to ask other bloggers how to do something. I learned to put pictures on my blog, because a blogger in Paris, France took the time to relate to me how to do it. I learned how to use the gadget thingies, because a blogger in Missouri took the time to walk me through how to do it. Ask and they will answer….
Yep, I love my bloggy friends!
Some of the more tech aspects. How to add a code, how to do automatic post from a word doc. ect.
Thank you!
All great ideas! My thoughts we be to discuss the basics of WordPress and the other major blogging platforms, how to generate blog topics (I struggle sometimes so I’d love to hear those ideas!) and advice on networking and connecting with other bloggers.
Good luck! Sounds like a great class!
Thanks!
What a great idea. I’d love to know how to tweak design type things such as your layout, buttons, etc. Also where is the best place to look for different widgets (or plugins)?
Also, I’m in the process of making the decision of moving from Blogger to WordPress and am extremely nervous about where to actually start, how to export everything over and what other changes I’ll need to make or be aware of so anything on that would be helpful too (I guess that’s only if you’ve had that experience yourself though)!
Different hosting options and their benefits or drawbacks?
I moved over from Blogger to WP several years ago (though, I started fresh, and didn’t export anything)… and I love WP so much better! It took a bit of getting the hang of things, but now I much prefer it. I find I have more options, and it’s not nearly as glitch-y.
Thanks for your input!
Make sure to include the basic design, font, style tips. I see way too many blogs that are too busy with Comic Sans font that’s too light for the background.
Thank you! And, this should be easy enough, given I’ve been teaching myself about it because I want to be a Graphic Design artist!
For me its all about getting readers to my blog. I finally figured out how to set up most of the stuff. I use a free wordpress site. now i’m searching for other blogs I like. I want to post them on my site too.
