God-Sized Dreams: Keep Movin’

January 26, 2013

GodSizedDreamsTeamHolley has asked us the next question of the God-Sized Dreams team:  Think back to another time when you took positive action in your life. What’s one thing that helped you move forward that you could apply again now and someone else could benefit from hearing too?

Back in 2005, I had read a book that got me started with a good run at weight loss. For the first time in 7 years, I was actually succeeding! And, the one thing, I think, that helped me {other than seeing the pounds drop off, which was ongoing motivation} was to stay close to God, and keep being grateful. I was engrossed in an online Bible study. I was doing a sort of Bible study through the book I’d found the weight loss stuff in. And, I was constantly thanking God for both the pounds lost, and for the little treasures He was dropping into my life on a regular basis at that time {used clothing for my kids when I couldn’t afford to buy new; compliments from others; etc}.

For apart from Me, you can do nothing.”
– John 15:5

Everything seems to work out better — more smoothly — when I include God in it. As my current Scripture memory verse says:

With man, this is impossible. But with God, ALL things are possible.
– Matthew 19:26

Lately, I’ve been walking closer with God, and it’s been making a huge difference. I’ve already seen some success in my weight loss efforts {something I’d not seen since 2005, and I think that was in large part due to the fact that I’d walked away from a closeness with God, and was letting life get in the way}. And, part of that, too, is trusting Him — believing that He wants to {and will} help me.

Of course, this doesn’t all apply only to weight loss. That’s just the example that I could come up with for something positive I’ve done and what kept me moving forward. As soon as I stopped focusing on God as the source of my success … stopped believing Him to help me … I went right back to my old habits, and my old ways of coping with life {eating}.

As long as the king sought guidance from the Lord,
God gave him success.” — 2 Chronicles 26:5

And, because I didn’t see that I had dropped God out of the equation, I just kept spiraling downward. Now, though, I’m back on the upswing, and I am praying to stay there. ;)

  1. Have you read “Made to Crave” by Lysa TerKeurst? It’s a book that talks about food and keeping God in the equation. It came to mind as I was reading your post this morning.

    • Thank you, yes, I have! I have the DVD, the participant’s guide, and two copies of the book, actually! (I loan out the one copy, and keep the other for myself). Very good resource(s)! :D
