Once again, this week’s BTT post was something I just couldn’t answer (it’s about favorite ending sentences of books, and I just don’t remember the last sentences of books I’ve read!) SO, I am once again — in order to participate in BTT — pulling from the Booking Through Thursday Archives, and using an older post to respond. 😉
BTT asked on August 30, 2007:
“There was a widely bruited-about statistic reported last week, stating that 1 in 4 Americans did not read a single book last year. Clearly, we don’t fall into that category, but . . . how many of our friends do? Do you have friends/family who read as much as you do? Or are you the only person you know who has a serious reading habit?”
I have friends and family that like to read, but not ONE of them reads as much as I do! They all, actually, think I’m completely crazy for the number of books I read in a year…which is approximately 55 books (and for the number of books — over 1250 — in my personal collection!). 😉
I also have a couple of friends (and maybe family members, too) who don’t read much –if anything!– at all! I once asked my one friend if she reads, and she said “No — I don’t like to read at all. I never read“. This just STUNS me! How can anyone NOT read??? How can anyone not LIKE to read??? My brain just can’t accept that concept! LOL.
Yes, I know there are some people who can’t read… they’ve never learned. And, I really wish that problem didn’t exist. I’ve even known a woman who didn’t know how to read, and I felt so sorry for her. I wanted so badly to help her learn! I guess there’s a new program on television about people who can’t read or write. I think it’s wonderful that at least someone out there is willing to try to help these people learn! I really can’t even imagine what it’s like to go through life not being able to read. 😦
As for me, I know I’m blessed. I have grown up knowing how to read, I come from a family who encouraged reading (my mom and dad both are readers, as are my step-mom and step-dad — but, like I said, they’re just not as *avid* as me!), and I now have children who read above their grade levels. 😀
Yes, I’m very blessed, indeed.
