Reading along in Gretchen Rubin’s book, “The Happiness Project“, yesterday, I found out that she’s as obsessive as me when it comes to … pens!
I mean, seriously… I’m the kind of gal who, when looking for a new pen, had to ask 5 or 6 of her coworkers which pen they thought would be the best one to get… and in the end, ended up going with her own choice, anyway. The coworkers all complained that I was making too big of a deal out of it — it’s “just a pen”, they said. But, they didn’t understand, obviously.
For me, it’s not “just a pen”… it’sĀ a tool! As Gretchen put it:
“It’s such a joy to write with a good pen instead of making do with an underinked pharmaceutical promotional pen picked up from a doctor’s office. My new pens weren’t cheap, but when I think of all the time I spend using pens and how much I appreciate a good pen, I realize it was money well spent. Finely made tools help make work a pleasure.” (pg. 171-172, “The Happiness Project“)
I write a TON, so pens are very valuable to me… and they have to be just the right kind. They have to be comfortable, they have to not leave smudges or such on the page, and they have to write fluidly. For me, that describes a BIC Cristal ballpoint pen:
These are my most favorite pens in the whole wide world, and I’d prefer them over any other — I would even go so far as to disregard a sale on other types of pens, just to be able to buy these instead.
So yeah… I’m kind of kooky when it comes to pens, but that’s me, and I’m okay with it. š

Ooh, I love the Bic Crystal Pens! I too am a pen freak- the pen has to be just right for me to get the work done. If the pen isn’t right, nothing feels right and I can’t write well. I have a whole bin full of pens because I buy them constantly. I probably have enough pens to last me the rest of my natural life. š

Again, I agree with you. I love the Cristal pens. I get complained to all the time because it’s just my natural inclination to steal a pen when I like the way it writes. I was at the bank signing some papers with a pen from the banker. It was so smooth and the color was nice and bright so I asked if I could have it. He looked at me like I was crazy and said there are pens over on the counter for customers. I said I know, I just like this one. He gave me the pen but I think he thought I was a real nut job!

I agree, I love pens. I remember in University I had to buy new pens before every exam. Why? Because once the two pens I had on me, ran out. I’m a really shy person and had to ask the invigilator to allow me to go into my bag and get a new one. I had to walk in front of the who auditorium writing the exam…
