Musing Mondays (Dec.31)

Here it is… the new version of Musing Mondays! Each week, you’ll see the same set of questions… and you’ll pick which one you  want to answer that week. I know this is slightly less exciting than what Musing Mondays has been to this point, but I am burning out on doing daily memes, and need to simplify things a bit. So, I am making MM a little more self-sustaining (where I don’t have to really think about it too much), and will keep my other weekly memes the same, for now. I hope you’ll still play along!

MusingMondays5Musing Mondays asks you to muse about one of the following each week…

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying it.

My musing…

I am currently reading “Radical Well-Being” by Rita Hancock, M.D. It’s a review book that the author sent to me. It came out for publication early, so if it sounds interesting to you, you’ll have to pick up a copy! So far, I am enjoying my read through it, and keep thinking of people that I want to share it with. For example, my sister-in-law. She’s always in a lot of pain, due to an old injury, and I wonder if some of the things in this book might help her.

See the blurb for the book {here}.

The Sunday Salon (Dec. 30)

sundaysalon3Well, this has not been a fun week for me. On December 24th (last Monday), I woke up with chills, and feeling achey, and with the cough that I’d already had deciding it was going to be much worse. I spent the day lying on the couch, passing in and out of sleep.

This continued throughout most of the week, thereby ruining my Christmas gatherings. I did manage to make it over to my Mom’s on Christmas day, but I was a zombie… it wasn’t the best of Christmases, that’s for sure. I am only now — almost a full week later — starting to feel a little more like myself, again.

The worst part was, there was a family gathering on the evening of December 27th that I’d soooo been looking forward to, as my cousin was home visiting, and she’s a favorite cousin. I haven’t seen her in at least 5 years, if not more, so I was very much looking forward to getting in some quality time. Needless to say, my stupid cold (or, whatever this is), kept me home, and I did not get to see my cousin. 😦 Oh, man, was it ever hard to stay home that night, especially since hubby & the kids went over to his parents’ house for a visit, given that we weren’t going to my Aunt’s after all. So, I was left home alone.

Anyhoo. Enough whining. That’s how my week’s been, and I’m done with the pity-party. LOL

RadicalWellbeing_RitaHancockMDI got a book in the mail, the other day, so that helped to perk me back up. It was “Radical Well-Being” by Rita Hancock, M.D. Dr. Rita is the author of “The Eden Diet” (which I highly, highly recommend!), and she had emailed to ask if I’d like to read & review this newest book of her’s. I agreed, and now it’s here. I’ve already started reading it, and so far, it’s good.

I’m starting to really get excited for the new year. I love a fresh start, and new years are great for that. 😉 I’ve been prepping my blogs for the switch over to 2013, and trying to decide whether or not I will participate in any reading challenges… I’m thinking probably not, as I’m just tired of that. I will do my own sort of “challenge”, in that I will still try to get a lot of TBRs read, etc. But, I don’t want to sign up for anything and put that kind of pressure on myself.

The one “challenge”, of sorts, that I am doing is taking part in Holley Gerth’s “God-Sized Dream” project. It’s 6 months of pursuing a God-given dream in cahoots with 99 other fellow women bloggers, and reading & reviewing Holley’s upcoming new book, “You Are Made for a God-Sized Dream” (March 2013). I already reviewed her eBook, “The Do What You Can Plan” — which you’ll be able to get your hands on soon, as it releases January 1st! It’s a fantastic little book full of motivation to get you moving on your dreams and goals. It basically tells you to start now, and keep on going! 😀

I also blogged about what my God-sized dreams are for 2013. Yes, my list is ambitious. But, the things on that list are all of great importance to me. So, I’m looking forward to seeing where God takes me with each of them in the new year!

tired_of_starting_overOne of my “dreams” is to finally get over my weight issues, once and for all. I have about fifty excess pounds that need to go, and I plan to use the Intuitive Eating method (aka “mindfulness”) to help me shed the pounds. It worked for me, before, so I know it will work for me, again. And, as part of that goal, I put up new inspirational posters on my bedroom wall, yesterday. One of them is a picture I found in a magazine of a 99-year-old woman named Esther, who still runs marathons! I mean, seriously… if a 99-year-old woman can run a marathon, then I have absolutely NO EXCUSES for sitting on my butt and complaining about my health! It is time to do something, instead of always bemoaning my situation but never changing. I Googled it, and found this story of another 90-something who still runs marathons, too — this mega-inspires me!

MrPenumbras24HrBookstore_RobinSloanOn a bookish note, the other day I picked up a book from the local library called “Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore” by Robin Sloan. The cover of it is very unassuming, but I still kind of like it because it’s all books. Well, now I love this cover even more! Why? Because, that night, when I went to bed, I shut off the light, and thought it weird that this book seemed to be “glowing” on my bookshelf… so, I went over to inspect it… and found out that it is a glow-in-the-dark book cover!!! Can we say… Coolest. Library book. EVER!!! ..? I was giddy! I grabbed the book and rushed out to the other room to share my finding with my hubby & kids. Hubby was a party-pooper and wasn’t nearly as impressed by this find as I was. My kids, on the other hand, thought it was pretty cool. 😉 LOL

Yes, small things amuse me. 😛

Anyhoo. I will be staying home, today, as my family goes out to one last family Christmas gathering (I am still coughing, and don’t want to go around my niece’s new baby, or get anyone else sick, for that matter). Then, tomorrow I am working for four hours in the morning, and we’ll stay home and do our traditional New Years’ Eve thing:  steak & seafood-stuffed mushroom caps for dinner, then watch a couple of movies until the “Ball” drops in Times Square on TV. Then I’ll head to bed.

Wishing every one of my readers a very HAPPY NEW YEAR! Stay safe… and, Cheers! 😀

REVIEW: “When Dreams Come True” by Eric & Leslie Ludy

WhenDreamsComeTrue_Eric_LeslieLudyThis is the story of Eric & Leslie Ludy’s romance — how they were before God changed them, the promises they made to God to let Him write their love stories, their meeting each other and the subsequent friendship that turned into a romance written by God.

I loved this book, and could see so much of myself in both Eric & Leslie at times. I loved how sweet their friendship and then romance was, and how involved they let their families be.

This is the best kind of “happily ever after” book… definitely recommended.

REVIEW: “A Woman’s Guide to Reading Through the Bible in One Year” by Diane Stortz

This guide, written for women, has 52 weeks’ worth of readings through the Bible, which will take you through the entire thing in one year. Each week you get the following:

– a passage that gives an overview of the readings for that week
– your selected readings
– checkpoints (things to look for while reading)
– “share the journey” questions, which include:
  • “How did you experience God’s heart this week?”
  • “Something you learned / an insight you gained”
  • “A verse or passage to remember”
  • “Questions you had while reading”
This book wasn’t exactly what I expected, but I still think it’s a great resource. It can certainly help to make your Bible reading a fuller experience.

WWW Wednesdays (Dec.26)

WWW_Wednesdays4To play along, just answer the following three (3) questions…

• What are you currently reading?
• What did you recently finish reading?
• What do you think you’ll read next?

My answers:

WhenDreamsComeTrue_Eric_LeslieLudyWhat are you currently reading? I’m still reading “When Dreams Come True” by Eric & Leslie Ludy, which is the story of how they met. It’s cute, and I’m enjoying it.

LudyLeslie_AuthenticBeautyWhat did you recently finish reading? I finished “Authentic Beauty” by Leslie Ludy, and thought it was good. It’s about how young women can make themselves set apart for God.

What do you think you’ll read next? Honestly, I have no idea.

The Sunday Salon: Merry Christmas

sundaysalon3So, hubby and I were out doing the last bits of our Christmas shopping, yesterday, and we went to the local mall. All day, I had held onto my purse, making sure I had hold of the zipper-pull so that I could keep my purse closed, and no one could get into it. Well, in the one store, I must’ve forgotten to hold on to it, as when I left the store, I grabbed hold, and realized the zipper wasn’t closed! Immediately I panicked, and checked the contents of my purse! Everything was there, so I figured that maybe I’d just left it open and didn’t realize. I zipped it shut, and continued on my way.

Later, I mentioned to my husband about this, and he said, “Oh, wow… so she did get to you!” Then he proceeded to tell me how, in that same store, some woman had been tracking me really close, and had backed off after my husband had given her a dirty look. I didn’t even know she was there! :-O So, yeah… some woman tried to pickpocket me while we were Christmas shopping! I am a little freaked out by this, but oh-so-grateful that she wasn’t successful — she probably could’ve walked away with my Blackberry, and I would have been majorly disappointed (it’s still fairly new to me).

Anyway. I got the majority of my Christmas shopping done… and yes, I realize that Christmas is now 2 days away. Hubby’s going to have to pick up a couple more things, tomorrow. But, they’re mainly just gift cards, so it won’t be too much of a hassle.

WhenDreamsComeTrue_Eric_LeslieLudyI also got to go out to Red Lobster for my belated birthday dinner, last night, and then we went to see “Breaking Dawn: part 2” at the theatre (finally!). Good stuff all around!

Today is the first of our Christmas gatherings. We’ll be going to see my mom’s side of the family… grandma, cousins, etc. It’s always a nice afternoon. Then, tomorrow I’m working for part of the day, and am going to attempt to get some reading in, in the afternoon, as we have nothing going on tomorrow night (which is unusual for us for the 24th — we normally go to hubby’s parents’, but they’re switching things up, this year). Christmas day will be spent with my mom, and then we have a couple of other gatherings throughout the rest of the week.

I am half done reading “When Dreams Come True” by Eric & Leslie Ludy, and I’d really like to finish it before the end of the year. My record stands at 81 books (2009), so I won’t beat that, but I’m glad to have gotten close! 😀

You’ll see it in tomorrow’s post, but I am taking a short break from memes for the Christmas holiday… so, Musing Mondays & Teaser Tuesdays are cancelled, this week. I apologize to anyone who will be really put out by this, but I just want to spend the time with my family. I will return to the memes the following week, but with a small change to Musing Mondays — you’ll have to wait and see what it is, though, ’cause I’m not telling. 😉

Wishing you all a Merry Christmas!

REVIEW: “The Do What You Can Plan” by Holley Gerth

DoWhatYouCanPlan_HolleyGerth_EBOOKAs part of belonging to Holley’s “God-Sized Dream Team” (which I blogged about here), I got an advanced-reader e-book copy of this little book. It’s sooooo good! The eBook will be available in January 2013, so you don’t have long to wait!

Only 56 pages in length, this book is little, but it is packed with so much inspiration and motivation! It’s laid out so that you can read it over 21 days — which studies show is the length of time it takes to change a habit. The book talks about things like goals, making changes, pushing past fear, overcoming obstacles, and so much more.

Honestly — go get yourself a copy of this when it’s available! It’s totally worth it! 😀

EndersGame_OrsonSCardWhat do you think you’ll read next? Honestly, I’m not sure if I’ll get in any more books, this year. The coming week will be full of holiday celebrations and work, so I don’t know if I’ll have any time. I might sneak in a few minutes here and there with “Ender’s Game” by Orson Scott Card.

Teaser Tuesdays (Dec.18)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

 Grab your current read
• Open to a random page
• Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
• BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
• Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

WhenDreamsComeTrue_Eric_LeslieLudyMy Teasers:

“I leaned forward intently as Kevin smiled confidently and rose to the occasion. I never forgot his answer.”

~ p.70, “When Dreams Come True” by Eric & Leslie Ludy

Musing Mondays (Dec.17)

MusingMondays5This week’s musing – courtesy of http://www.kwizgiver.com – asks…

Is there a particular book that is your nemesis–the book you’re determined to one day finish?

My answer: I don’t know… I can’t think of one, at the moment. Maybe “One-Hundred Years of Solitude” by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I hated it, so I set it aside. But, everyone says it’s soooo good, and I feel like I should give it another chance.

The Sunday Salon (Dec.16)

sundaysalon3So, this isn’t going to be a long post… because I’ve caught the cold bug that’s been going around. It started on Thursday evening with just a tickle in my throat, but by Friday I was right done in. And, I’ve spent the majority of the weekend in bed, too weak to do much but read.

sick_puppy

The good news? I’ve finished 2.5 books! 😀

This week starts all of the Christmas craziness… I’m working two days in the coming week, plus it’ll be my birthday on Thursday (and my mom is making me dinner & cheesecake!), and then we have the actual Christmas get-togethers which start, next Sunday, with Christmas with my Grandma.

So, yeah…

Currently reading “When Dreams Come True” by Eric & Leslie Ludy… and it’s good. It’s their story of how they met and fell in love. I’m enjoying it, so far.
